Sometimes, the most satisfying games are the ones that let you slow down and simply create. ShantyTown, the charming urban diorama builder from solo developer Erik Rempen of Silk Softworks and publisher Kinephantom Games, is expanding its creative possibilities with a new update that gives players even more ways to bring their miniature neighbourhoods to life.
Since launching on Steam in April 2026, ShantyTown has attracted players with its unconventional approach to city building. Rather than juggling budgets, managing resources or worrying about traffic congestion, the game invites players to create colourful, densely packed neighbourhoods filled with character and atmosphere.
The latest update, version 1.06.01, builds on that laid-back experience with more than 70 placeable interior items across 11 new categories. Previously confined to the interiors of buildings, these objects can now be positioned freely, allowing players to add more personality and detail to their creations. From cluttered shopfronts to cosy corners, the possibilities for designing lived-in spaces have become even more extensive.
The update also improves object stacking, making it easier to layer decorations and construct the tightly packed environments that define the game’s visual identity. Additional quality-of-life improvements help players locate missed unlocks, while visual fixes and handheld display adjustments make the overall experience smoother.
For newcomers curious about the game, the free Steam demo has also been refreshed with post-launch improvements and now includes three locations to explore: Welcome Pier, Shrine and Lighthouse.

A Different Kind of City Builder
What makes ShantyTown particularly appealing is its emphasis on creativity over efficiency. Players work with three core elements — decorations, lighting and utilities — to complete and upgrade buildings, creating neighbourhoods that feel organic rather than meticulously planned.
Across 20 distinct locations, players can experiment with different layouts, stack objects into intricate arrangements and watch their creations come alive through a changing day-night cycle. An adaptive soundtrack by vaporwave artist Macroblank adds to the relaxing atmosphere, making the experience as much about enjoying the process as admiring the finished result.
Once a location is completed, players can photograph their creation and preserve it in an in-game dossier. Creative Mode also allows them to revisit locations with unlocked objects, while the unrestricted Blankspace offers room for larger custom compositions.

The game’s growing community has become an important part of its appeal. Regular building competitions have challenged players to design everything from rooftops and bathhouses to casinos and entire scenes constructed around a single building. These creative challenges have helped keep the experience fresh while inspiring new approaches to miniature urban design.
With approximately 97 per cent positive user reviews on Steam at the time of the announcement, ShantyTown has earned a Very Positive reception from players who appreciate its relaxed pace and distinctive creative freedom.
