Review: Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Carbon Gen 8

Slim and Light

Light in weight, but big in performance

The Yoga Slim 7i is now in its eighth generation with a monitor size of 13.3 inches and minor design updates, like rounder sides. Just like its predecessor, the display lid is made of carbon fibre and the base is magnesium alloy, but with improved structural reinforcement to cut the weight by 40% while improving rigidity by 25%. Being MIL-STD 810H certified, you know the Yoga Slim 7i can survive the abuse.

The most significant updates are the 13th Generation Intel Core processors in i5 or i7 variants, as well as software features. Also inheriting the other premium Yoga lines are smart settings like intelligent sensing of your presence in front of the laptop, which will automatically log in or log out without touching the keyboard. Audio is expansive thanks to the speakers tuned by Harman Kardon to give a sense of space and loudness.

There is a sense of liberation when using the Yoga Slim 7i, allowing the user to focus on content creation and consumption and not feel weighed down. At less than 1 kg, there is no hesitation in bringing the Yoga Slim 7i wherever I go and to get things done. In keeping with the slim profile, only USB-C ports are available, and none of the legacy connectors. This means users have to get a USB Hub to connect to USB Type-A, HDMI, Ethernet, and even 3.5mm audio.

A grim reminder of legacy in this modern laptop is the 720p HD-resolution webcam, delivering mediocre image quality. Keyboard travel distance is short, so keyboard warriors might feel a little stifled by the short vital presses. The 2.5K display quality is spectacular with a 90Hz PureSight anti-glare finish, keeping you glued to the screen, in a good way. The review unit is non-touch, but the touch-enabled option is available, and I highly recommend it as it speeds up input interactions just by tapping the area on the screen to direct the cursor instead of sliding your fingers on the touchpad.

Battery life is rated to last up to 10 hours for work, and you can quickly charge the laptop with any Power Delivery-certified charger or power bank. A quick 15-minute charge gets you an additional 3 hours of usage.

Rating: 4/5
We Say: A perfect design with almost perfect features, the Yoga Slim 7i Carbon caters to users who travel light with no dependence on external peripherals.
