Independent Swiss watchmaker De Bethune has introduced the DB28xs Dark Sand, a new interpretation of its acclaimed DB28xs Steel Wheels that places material innovation and artisanal finishing at the forefront. Presented in a compact 39mm case crafted from matt anthracite zirconium, the latest addition to the DB28 collection embraces a darker, more mineral-inspired aesthetic while retaining the technical sophistication and distinctive design language that have become synonymous with the brand.
The DB28xs Dark Sand immediately stands apart through its unique treatment of light and texture. While previous DB28 models often celebrated reflective surfaces and polished finishes, the new Dark Sand adopts a more understated approach. Light is absorbed, sculpted and subtly reflected across its various surfaces, creating a rich visual experience defined by depth, contrast and nuanced detailing.

Like other members of the DB28 family, the watch features De Bethune’s signature crown positioned at 12 o’clock and an openworked dial architecture that offers an unobstructed view of the movement beneath. The design remains faithful to the spirit of the DB28xs Steel Wheels while introducing an entirely different visual character through the use of darker materials and finishes.
At the heart of the dial is a finely structured black sandblasted titanium base that evokes the texture and density of volcanic sand. The dark foundation provides a dramatic backdrop for the circular satin-finished black titanium hours and minutes track, which is punctuated by polished mauve titanium hour markers. Matching mauve-toned hands introduce a subtle purplish hue that adds contrast while maintaining excellent legibility.

One of the most distinctive elements of the watch is De Bethune’s iconic deltoid-shaped bridge positioned prominently at the centre of the dial. Finished in anthracite and decorated with a traditional barleycorn guilloché pattern, the bridge appears almost suspended above the movement. Its combination of bevelled, sandblasted, and polished surfaces creates a dynamic interplay between shades of anthracite grey and deep black, highlighting the meticulous craftsmanship involved in its creation.

Beneath the striking exterior lies the hand-wound DB2115V13 calibre, a movement that exemplifies De Bethune’s commitment to both innovation and precision. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, the movement incorporates several patented technologies developed by the manufacturer over the years. Among them is a titanium balance wheel fitted with white gold weights, designed to optimise inertia and stability while maintaining resistance to temperature fluctuations and air penetration.
The movement also features De Bethune’s proprietary balance spring with a unique flat terminal curve, engineered to improve accuracy and consistency. A silicon escape wheel further enhances efficiency and energy transfer, while a triple parachute shock-absorbing system protects the movement from impacts and external disturbances.

The technical artistry extends to the reverse side of the watch, where the screw-down caseback reveals additional details of the movement. Finished with an anthracite microlight treatment, the caseback houses a six-day power reserve indicator accented by subtle mauve and golden tones. The impressive power reserve is made possible by De Bethune’s self-regulating twin-barrel system, one of the manufacturer’s signature innovations.

Comfort remains a defining characteristic of the DB28xs Dark Sand. Despite its technical complexity, the watch maintains a slim profile measuring just 8mm thick. The patented floating lug system, a hallmark of the DB28 collection, allows the watch to adapt naturally to the shape and movement of the wrist, ensuring exceptional wearability. The timepiece is paired with a leather-lined fabric strap secured by a matching zirconium pin buckle, further reinforcing its lightweight and ergonomic design.
With the DB28xs Dark Sand, De Bethune continues its exploration of advanced materials and contemporary watchmaking design while remaining deeply rooted in traditional craftsmanship. The use of durable matt zirconium, combined with the brand’s signature open architecture and hand-finished details, results in a timepiece that is both technically sophisticated and visually distinctive.
The De Bethune DB28xs Dark Sand is priced at S$157,000 including tax.
