Samsung has expanded its storage lineup with the launch of the new Samsung 990 SSD, offering faster speeds, improved power efficiency and larger capacity options for users looking to upgrade their PCs. Available in 1TB and 2TB configurations, the PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD is designed to deliver a balanced mix of performance and efficiency for gamers, content creators and everyday users.
Built on Samsung’s latest V-NAND technology and in-house controller, the Samsung 990 SSD delivers impressive transfer speeds. The 2TB model achieves sequential read speeds of up to 7,250MB/s, while the 1TB version reaches 7,150MB/s. Both models offer write speeds of up to 6,450MB/s, helping reduce game loading times, speed up file transfers and improve responsiveness when handling demanding workloads.
Random performance has also received a boost, with the 2TB model delivering up to 850,000 read IOPS and 1.2 million write IOPS, while the 1TB version offers up to 700,000 read IOPS and 1.1 million write IOPS. These improvements translate into quicker application launches, smoother multitasking and more responsive gaming experiences, particularly for users working with large creative projects or modern AAA titles.
Storage capacity is another key highlight. Samsung says the 2TB model is capable of storing up to 30 large-scale games, based on an average game size of around 64GB, making it an attractive upgrade for gamers with expanding digital libraries as well as creators working with high-resolution media files.
Beyond raw speed, Samsung has focused on improving efficiency. The new 990 SSD delivers up to 38% better power efficiency compared to the previous 990 PRO, allowing users to enjoy high-speed performance while consuming less power. This makes it well suited for systems where thermal management and energy consumption are equally important.
To help users manage their drives, Samsung bundles the SSD with its Samsung Magician Software, which provides health monitoring, firmware updates, performance optimisation and seamless data migration. The software is designed to keep the drive running at peak performance while offering tools to safeguard stored data.
The Samsung 990 SSD features an M.2 (2280) form factor with PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe 2.0 connectivity, Samsung V-NAND memory, hardware encryption support including AES 256-bit Full Disk Encryption, and a three-year limited warranty.
The Samsung 990 SSD will be available in 1TB and 2TB capacities from the end of July 2026, providing users with a compelling new storage solution that combines high-end performance, improved efficiency and reliable everyday usability.
