ZENITH Defies Gravity with New DEFY Zero G Sapphire Limited Editions

Swiss luxury watchmaker ZENITH has unveiled two extraordinary new editions of the DEFY Zero G, showcasing the brand’s patented gravity-defying technology in striking sapphire cases. Released as part of ZENITH’s 160th anniversary celebrations, the new models arrive in deep blue sapphire and fully transparent sapphire, with each version limited to just 10 pieces worldwide.

The DEFY Zero G remains one of the most technically ambitious timepieces in modern haute horlogerie. Originally introduced in 2008, the collection stands alone as the only wristwatch movement equipped with a gimbal-mounted “Gravity Control” escapement module that continuously neutralises the effects of gravity on timekeeping precision in real time.

Inspired by Marine Chronometers
According to ZENITH, the concept behind the Zero G movement draws inspiration from historical marine chronometers, which used gimbal suspension systems to maintain stable positioning aboard constantly moving ships.

Rather than stabilising the entire movement, ZENITH miniaturised the concept by isolating and stabilising only the regulating organ inside a self-regulating Gravity Control module. This weighted gyroscopic cage constantly remains horizontal regardless of wrist movement, effectively eliminating positional variations that can affect mechanical accuracy.

The development reportedly took seven years to complete and remains protected by a dedicated patent for the Gravity Control cage. ZENITH explains that the transmission of power to the escapement required an intricate conical bevel gear system and miniature differential to ensure consistent torque regardless of the module’s orientation.

A Miniaturised Horological Engineering Marvel
Over the years, ZENITH significantly refined the Gravity Control mechanism. By 2018, the gyroscopic module had been redesigned to occupy only 30% of its original volume while incorporating 139 individual components within an incredibly compact structure measuring approximately 1.3 cubic centimetres.

The module also integrates nine non-magnetic, lubrication-free ceramic ball bearings to improve durability and efficiency.

For the new anniversary editions, ZENITH houses the movement inside 46mm sapphire cases crafted entirely from blocks of sapphire crystal, a material nearly as hard and scratch-resistant as diamond.

The blue sapphire edition introduces a rich celestial aesthetic, while the transparent sapphire version offers a completely unobstructed view of the movement from every angle.

Lapis Lazuli Dial and Skeletonised El Primero Movement
Continuing the anniversary theme, both models feature offset hour and minute displays paired with a stunning lapis lazuli dial. Flecked with natural gold-coloured pyrite, the stone evokes a star-filled night sky while ensuring every watch possesses a unique appearance.

At the heart of the watch is the fully skeletonised El Primero 8812 calibre. Visible from both the front and back, the openworked architecture places the Gravity Control module prominently at 6 o’clock, where it continuously rotates to maintain its horizontal position.

The high-frequency movement operates at 5Hz or 36,000 vibrations per hour and delivers a 50-hour power reserve. The movement also features:

● A silicon escapement wheel
● A nickel-silicon anchor
● A double-arrow regulator inspired by historical ZENITH chronométrier Charles Fleck
● A laser-decorated platinum counterweight engraved to resemble a celestial body

Limited to Just 10 Pieces Each
Both the blue sapphire and transparent sapphire editions of the DEFY Zero G are paired with blue alligator leather straps lined with rubber and secured by titanium folding clasps.

Each version is limited to only 10 pieces globally and will be available through ZENITH boutiques, online stores and authorised retailers worldwide.

The Zenith Defy Zero G Sapphire editions (featuring a full sapphire case and the Gravity Control gimbal escapement) are priced at (USD207,505) or (€220,000) or CHF (200,000). Each of the two colourways (clear and blue) is an exclusive limited edition of just 10 pieces worldwide.
