Apple Introduces All-New iPad mini with OLED Display, A20 Pro Chip and Water Resistance

Apple has unveiled its most significant iPad mini update yet, introducing a completely refreshed model that combines a stunning OLED display, powerful A20 Pro chip and enhanced durability in an even more portable design.

Designed for users who want the versatility of an iPad without the bulk of a larger tablet, the all-new iPad mini features a larger 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR display, improved cameras, faster wireless connectivity and advanced Apple Intelligence capabilities.

Available in two elegant finishes, midnight and starlight, the new iPad mini is just 5.4mm thin, making it Apple’s thinnest and most capable mini tablet to date.

A Bigger, Brighter OLED Display
One of the most noticeable upgrades is the transition to an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, replacing the previous generation’s LCD screen.

Despite the larger display, Apple has maintained the same overall footprint by reducing the bezels by 24 per cent. This gives users more screen space for reading, watching videos, gaming and creative work without sacrificing the compact form factor that makes the iPad mini so appealing.

OLED technology brings pixel-level lighting control, delivering deeper blacks, richer contrast and more vibrant colours. With a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and support for the P3 wide colour gamut, images and videos appear more immersive and lifelike.

Brightness has also received a substantial boost. The new display reaches up to 1,200 nits of peak brightness, more than twice that of the previous-generation iPad mini, while offering 600 nits of full-screen brightness for both SDR and HDR content.

For those who enjoy reading before bedtime, the display can dim to just 1 nit, making it more comfortable to use in darker environments.

Apple is also introducing an optional nano-texture display, previously available on higher-end iPad models. Designed to reduce glare and reflections, it is particularly useful for users who frequently work outdoors or in brightly lit environments.

Thinner, Lighter and Now Water-Resistant
Portability has always been one of the iPad mini’s biggest strengths, and Apple has taken it a step further with a slimmer and lighter design.

At just 5.4mm thick, the new iPad mini is easier to slip into a handbag or backpack, while its compact dimensions make it comfortable to hold with one hand.

For the first time, the iPad mini also features an IP67 water and dust resistance rating, offering added protection against accidental splashes, rain and dust.

This makes it a more practical companion for outdoor activities, travel and everyday situations where a tablet might be exposed to the elements.

According to Apple, the device has been tested to withstand immersion in up to one metre of water for 30 minutes under controlled laboratory conditions. However, water resistance can diminish over time, and liquid damage is not covered under the standard warranty.

A20 Pro Brings a Huge Performance Boost
Powering the new iPad mini is Apple’s A20 Pro chip, built using advanced 2-nanometre process technology.

Featuring up to a 6-core CPU and a 7-core GPU, the processor delivers substantial improvements across productivity, gaming and creative applications.

Apple claims up to 60 per cent faster multithreaded CPU performance compared to the previous generation, making everyday tasks such as photo editing, multitasking and switching between applications feel more responsive.

Graphics performance has also improved by up to 2.7 times, thanks to a redesigned GPU architecture with Dynamic Caching, hardware-accelerated mesh shading and ray tracing.

For gamers, this means smoother gameplay and more realistic lighting effects in supported titles. Creative users can also benefit from faster 3D rendering and graphics-intensive workflows.

Artificial intelligence receives an equally significant upgrade. With Neural Accelerators integrated into each GPU core, the A20 Pro delivers up to 4.5 times faster AI performance than its predecessor.

The 512GB configuration also features a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, offering additional processing power for advanced on-device AI applications.

Together with more than twice the previous generation’s unified memory bandwidth, these improvements make the iPad mini a more capable device for running supported AI models locally.

Siri AI and Smarter Features with iPadOS 27
The new iPad mini comes with iPadOS 27, introducing the next generation of Apple Intelligence and a more capable Siri AI experience.

Designed to be more conversational and context-aware, Siri AI can help users find information across their messages, emails and photos, answer questions and perform actions related to content displayed on their screen.

For example, users can ask Siri about a document they are reading, request information about an image or get assistance with tasks across supported applications.

Apple Intelligence also brings more powerful photo-editing tools, including upgraded Clean Up, Spatial Reframing and Extend, allowing users to remove unwanted objects, improve image composition and expand the framing of photographs.

The updated Image Playground app can now generate photorealistic images, while Safari’s Notify Me feature helps users monitor websites for changes such as product restocks and price drops.

iPadOS 27 also introduces additional interface customisation through Liquid Glass, allowing users to adjust the transparency and tint of the operating system.

With iPadOS 27.2, the iPad mini will support extended display mode when connected to an external monitor, giving users more flexibility when multitasking with windowed applications.

Siri AI is rolling out in beta with iPadOS 27.2, with availability depending on language and region. Certain cloud-based Apple Intelligence features are also subject to usage limits.

A New Acoustic Display and Improved Cameras
Apple has also reimagined the iPad mini’s audio experience with a new Acoustic Display system.

Instead of relying solely on conventional speaker placement, the design incorporates specially engineered woofers coupled through the display to deliver stronger bass and increased volume.

Custom tweeters are positioned between the glass and aluminium enclosure, producing clearer high-frequency sound.
The result is a richer audio experience for watching movies, playing games and listening to music, despite the tablet’s compact dimensions.

The new audio architecture also incorporates a sealed enclosure, contributing to the iPad mini’s IP67 water and dust resistance.

Video calls receive an upgrade with a 12MP Centre Stage front camera, now positioned along the landscape edge for a more natural viewing angle during FaceTime calls and online meetings.

Centre Stage automatically keeps users framed as they move, making it particularly useful for video conferencing and collaborative work.

On the rear, a 12MP Wide camera supports Smart HDR 4 and 4K video recording at up to 60fps. An Adaptive True Tone flash improves low-light photography and document scanning.

Faster Wi-Fi 7 and Cellular Connectivity
Connectivity is another major area of improvement, with the new iPad mini featuring Apple’s N1 wireless networking chip.
The chip enables Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread connectivity, while improving the reliability and performance of features such as AirDrop and AirPlay.

For users who frequently work or travel outside Wi-Fi coverage, cellular models feature Apple’s new C2 modem, delivering up to 50 per cent faster cellular data speeds compared to the previous generation.

The modem is also designed for greater power efficiency, while eSIM support makes it easier to activate or transfer compatible mobile data plans digitally.

With iPadOS 27, switching between Wi-Fi and cellular networks becomes more seamless, helping users maintain connectivity while moving between locations.

More Ways to Create with Apple Pencil
Despite its compact dimensions, the iPad mini continues to support a wide range of productivity and creative accessories.

The new TechWoven Smart Folio features a lightweight two-panel design that magnetically attaches to the tablet. Available in navy blue and taupe, it offers adjustable viewing angles for reading, watching videos and working on the go.

The iPad mini is also compatible with both Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil Pro.

For students and casual users, Apple Pencil (USB-C) provides a convenient way to take handwritten notes, annotate documents and sketch ideas.

Meanwhile, Apple Pencil Pro introduces advanced creative features such as squeeze and barrel roll gestures, allowing artists and designers to interact more naturally with supported drawing applications.

Find My support also makes it easier to locate a misplaced Apple Pencil Pro.
