Indie title ShantyTown, developed solo by Erik Rempen of Silk Softworks and published by Kinephantom Games, is set to charm audiences at PAX East 2026, bringing its relaxing, detail-rich city-building gameplay to the show floor.
The game was featured in the PAX Rising Showcase, from March 26 to 29 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Centre, where attendees can get hands-on with the full experience ahead of its official release.
Building momentum with a growing community
ShantyTown has already gained significant traction ahead of launch. During Steam Next Fest (February 2026), the game doubled its wishlist count and attracted over 30,000 demo players, earning praise for its relaxing yet creatively engaging gameplay.

This momentum has extended to its community spaces, with the official Discord rapidly growing and hosting regular events. Weekly build competitions encourage players to showcase their creativity, with winners earning in-game recognition and rewards, including game keys and soundtrack access.
Creative Mode expands player freedom.
The latest demo introduces an expanded Creative Mode, offering players complete freedom to design without constraints. All previously unlocked buildings and decorations are accessible, allowing users to revisit locations or create entirely new communities in a sandbox environment.

Unlike traditional city-building games, ShantyTown emphasises open-ended design with no “wrong” answers. Players are encouraged to experiment, balancing optional objectives with personal creativity to craft unique, lived-in spaces.
Acosyy take on urban design
ShantyTown stands out by combining relaxing gameplay with dense, layered environments inspired by tightly packed urban neighbourhoods.
Key features include:
● 20 distinctive locations inspired by compact cityscapes
● Over 150 decorations to personalise each build
● A personal dossier system that tracks completed towns
● A handcrafted soundtrack by vaporwave artist Macroblank
● Advanced camera tools for capturing and sharing creations

This blend of creativity, atmosphere and structure gives players the freedom to build expressive dioramas while still engaging with light puzzle elements.
Launching soon on Steam
Following its PAX East appearance, ShantyTown is set to launch on April 16, 2026, on Steam.
Players can wishlist the game now and join the community to take part in ongoing events and updates.
