iPhone 17e: The iPhone That Gets the Basics Right

Apple’s iPhone 17e is positioned as the more accessible entry point into its latest iPhone generation. It brings meaningful upgrades across performance, camera capabilities, and storage, while keeping the price relatively grounded.

The iPhone 17e uses an aerospace-grade aluminium build and introduces Ceramic Shield 2, which offers significantly improved scratch resistance along with reduced glare. In day-to-day use, the phone feels sturdy and comfortable. I have to say, I really love the soft pink finish. It has this clean tone that fits nicely with my aesthetic.

The 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display continues to be a strong point, delivering sharp visuals, good brightness, and accurate colors whether indoors or under brighter conditions.

Performance is where the iPhone 17e stands out more clearly. Powered by the A19 chip, the phone handles everyday tasks with ease, from basic navigation to heavier workloads like gaming and multitasking. The experience is consistently smooth, and there is enough headroom for more demanding applications, including newer AI-driven features. The addition of Apple’s C1X modem also contributes to faster connectivity and improved efficiency.

To get a better sense of the phone, I tested the iPhone 17e across different environments in Singapore, from indoor exhibitions to outdoor park settings.

The 48MP Fusion camera performed consistently across both locations. Firstly, in the Albatross exhibition, I learnt about the complex, high-stakes decisions made during Singapore’s early nation-building years. The space features varied lighting and more intricate textures. Despite these challenging conditions, the camera handled contrast and colour well without overprocessing the image, preserving fine details and maintaining a natural, true-to-life look.

At the Science Centre’s Dinosaur Extinction exhibition, which recreates the prehistoric world with life-sized dinosaur models, immersive lighting and dramatic scenes depicting the extinction event, the environment leans heavily on low light and strong contrasts. In these conditions, Night mode helped retain the atmosphere of the scenes without making them look overly bright or artificial.

After the museums, we decided to take a walk in a park to see how the camera performs outdoors. The 2x zoom proved effective and clear, letting me get closer to subjects without losing detail.

Another feature I found especially useful is the ability to turn shots into portraits after the moment has passed. I can add background blur even after taking the photo, which gives me the flexibility to capture first and refine later.

Video performance was similarly reliable. Recording in 4K Dolby Vision produced clear footage, and audio quality held up reasonably well, even in crowded environments, thanks in part to wind-noise reduction and processing.

The iPhone 17e delivers smooth performance across the board. It can run AAA games, handle 4K streaming and multitasking between apps. It feels fast and responsive.

On the software side, iOS 26 introduces a refreshed design along with Apple Intelligence features that focus on practical use cases. Siri is smarter now that it is integrated with ChatGPT. Tools like Live Translation and Call Screening are designed to reduce friction in daily interactions rather than introduce entirely new workflows. Combined with the A19 chip, these features run smoothly and feel integrated into the overall experience.

Battery life is another area where the iPhone 17e performs reliably. It comfortably lasts through a full day of regular use. Charging has also been improved, with support for fast USB-C charging that reaches around 50 per cent in roughly 30 minutes.

The inclusion of MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging adds convenience and brings it in line with the broader iPhone ecosystem, making it easier to use accessories like chargers, wallets, and stands.

Overall, the iPhone 17e is a well-balanced everyday iPhone that focuses on getting the essentials right, delivering reliable performance and a capable camera.
