Canon has announced the launch of the EOS R1, its first flagship full-frame mirrorless camera under the EOS R system. This groundbreaking camera introduces cutting-edge image processing and autofocus systems, setting new standards in speed and performance for the digital era.
Elevating Professional Photography
David Yeo, Senior Marketing Manager of Consumer Business, Singapore Operations at Canon Singapore, emphasizes the significance of the EOS R1 in Canon’s lineup:
“As the pinnacle of our EOS lineup, the EOS R1 inherits the top-tier excellence of our 1 lineage, which has always been highly trusted by professionals.”
“The EOS R1 will empower professionals and craftsmen with class-leading control and performance, providing an additional edge in their professional production processes and workflows.”
Top-notch speed and Image Processing
The EOS R1 features a 24-megapixel back-illuminated (BSI) stacked CMOS sensor, elevating images to an impressive 96 megapixels through its unique In-Camera Upscaling technology. This technology, combined with improved light efficiency and faster readout speeds, lays the foundation for the camera’s revolutionary capabilities.

The new Accelerated Capture image processing system, featuring the innovative DIGIC Accelerator alongside DIGIC X, significantly amplifies processing speed and power. Deep learning algorithms enable unprecedented levels of autofocus (AF) and subject-tracking performance.

Features such as In-Camera Upscaling and Neural Network Noise Reduction, now executable in-camera, support fast-paced workflows, ensuring high-quality, publication-ready images are swiftly delivered to editors or press offices.
Smarter Subject Detection and Tracking
Canon’s first camera to feature the next-generation Dual Pixel Intelligent AF system, the EOS R1 leverages the powerful Accelerated Capture image processing system for superior AF and subject detection performance. The new Action Priority AF mode detects crucial actions in sports such as soccer, basketball, and volleyball, using deep learning to analyze ball positions, players’ joints, and multiple subjects. This ensures the capture of decisive moments in dynamic, fast-paced environments.
The Register People Priority feature allows the camera to prioritize up to 10 preregistered individuals, maintaining focus even when subjects turn their heads. Improved AF and subject tracking in People, Animal, and Vehicle-priority modes, aided by Cross-type AF, enhance the camera’s ability to detect small subjects and those affected by patterns or horizontal lines.
In-Camera Upscaling for Instant High-Resolution Crops
The EOS R1’s In-Camera Upscaling function uses deep learning algorithms to quadruple pixel count while preserving details and image quality, achieving results akin to a 96-megapixel camera.

This enables high-quality extreme crops on the spot, ideal for direct transmission to press offices. Neural Network Noise Reduction enhances image quality by reducing noise on RAW images, resulting in clean high ISO JPEGs.
Exceptional Image Stabilization and High-Speed Shooting
The camera boasts a 5-axis In-Body IS (Image Stabilizer), offering up to 8.5 stops’ equivalent stabilization with a compatible RF lens. The EOS R1 can shoot high-speed bursts up to 40 fps with an electronic shutter and 12 fps with a mechanical shutter. Faster sensor readout speeds reduce rolling shutter distortion, benefiting both still and video capture.
Seamless Operation and Advanced Features
Designed for professional use, the EOS R1 features improved Eye Control AF, offering faster and more reliable line-of-sight detection. The 9.44 million-dot, 0.9x magnification blackout-free EVF ensures a clear, uninterrupted view. New design features include shortcuts for instant recall of AF settings, focus preset functions, and dual CFexpress Type-B slots for high-speed recording.
The EOS R1 supports Wi-Fi 6/6E and the new 2.5GBase-T wired LAN protocol, allowing faster wireless and wired file transmission. Other professional workflow features include deep learning-based metering, blurred/out-of-focus image detection, and advanced video options like 6K 60p internal RAW capability, Canon Log 2 and 3, and support for in-camera LUT applications.
Pricing and Availability
The Canon EOS R1 will be available in November 2024 at a recommended retail price of $9599 from Canon authorized dealers.
