LG Electronics continues to garner accolades for its unwavering dedication to sustainability and environmentally conscious practices. The latest feather in its cap comes with the LG 2024 OLED evo TVs, which have been awarded certifications for Reducing CO2 and Measured CO2 by the esteemed Carbon Trust, alongside the Environmentally Evaluated Mark from Société Générale de Surveillance SA (SGS).
This marks the fourth consecutive year that LG’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives have been consistently recognized. Additionally, LG’s newest OLED TVs have secured their second consecutive Recycled Content certification, underscoring LG’s firm commitment to environmental stewardship.
The Carbon Trust plays a pivotal role in steering the world towards a future of zero carbon emissions by meticulously evaluating the environmental impact of products throughout their lifecycle, from production and distribution to use and disposal. Meanwhile, SGS certification focuses on resource efficiency and the presence of hazardous substances, while Intertek measures the proportion of recycled materials utilized. These organizations’ distinct methodologies foster responsible consumption practices across various industries, contributing to the overarching goal of global sustainability.
The inherent sustainability of LG OLED TVs has been a focal point in rigorous sustainability assessments. Unlike LCD TVs, LG OLED TVs boast a self-lit design that eliminates the need for a backlight, resulting in a simpler structure and fewer required components. For example, LG’s 65-inch OLED evo, crafted from ultra-light composite fibre, utilizes only 40 per cent of the plastic typically found in an LCD TV of equivalent size, weighing 20 per cent less.
Based on projected sales figures of LG OLED TVs for this year, the total plastic usage in LG OLED TVs from 2022 to 2024 is anticipated to be 45,000 tons lower than that of LCD TVs sold during the same period. This reduction in plastic consumption is estimated to lead to a decrease in carbon emissions of approximately 234,000 tons annually, equivalent to the carbon dioxide absorbed by a 30-year-old pine forest. This translates to roughly one-third of the area of Seoul or about 31,000 soccer fields.
Recycled plastics constitute approximately 20% of the plastic utilized in the manufacturing of all LG TVs, including OLED TVs, amounting to roughly 4,000 tons of recycled waste plastic each year.
In addition to environmental endeavours, LG’s diverse ESG initiatives have garnered recognition from esteemed domestic and international organizations. In 2023, LG secured a place in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for the twelfth consecutive year. The DJSI World ranks among the top ten per cent of the largest 2,500 global companies based on their long-term economic, environmental, social, and governance practices. LG’s continued inclusion on this prestigious list for twelve consecutive years is a significant achievement, as it remains the sole South Korean company in the Leisure Equipment & Products and Consumer Electronics industry category to achieve this milestone.
Moreover, LG has consistently received a ‘Comprehensive A grade’ from the ESG Evaluation and Rating Announcement of Korea ESG Standards Institute (KCGS) for three consecutive years, and last year, the company earned its fourth consecutive ‘A’ rating from the Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) ESG Rating.
“LG OLED TVs not only lead the market as the epitome of premium viewing experiences but also raise the bar for ESG standards,” remarked Baik Seon-pill, leader of the LG Home Entertainment Company’s Product Planning Division. “LG remains steadfast in its commitment to ongoing efforts aimed at fostering a better planet for all.”
