Last week, it was time for me to take a break from the bustling city of Singapore to the Land of Smiles in Bangkok. To capture the memories and highlights of the trip, Canon has kindly shared the EOS R10. The EOS R10 is a mid-range 24MP APS-C mirrorless camera that is capable of capturing still photos at up to 15 fps (23 fps with e-shutter) and oversampled 4K/30p video using the full sensor width. Also, provided with the EOS R10, I used the RF-S18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens. As such, join me in this article as I share Bangkok’s recommendations and my experience with EOS R10.
Day & Night Markets
What’s going to Bangkok without heading to a market? With day and night markets open throughout the week, a trip to Bangkok wouldn’t be complete without visiting at least one. So I packed my day bag, put the EOS R10 and was off in my Grab to the below markets.
Chatuchak Market, also known as the weekend market, is one of the world’s largest outdoor markets, covering an area of over 35 acres and featuring more than 15,000 stalls. Open for the whole week, Chatuchak Market is most well known for its weekend market where every stall is open and is offering a wide variety of products, including clothing, accessories, jewellery, antiques, handicrafts, furniture, and food.
At Chatuchak, while shopping for clothing and souvenirs, I took the chance to test out the In-Camera Panorama feature which EOS R10 is the pioneer for EOS cameras. By capturing up to 200 shots at a time and merging them, it delivered a high res panorama shot of the market. Look how bustling it was on a Saturday!
Srinagarindra Train Night Market
Next, I headed to Srinagarindra Train Night Market, also known as the “Train Market”, located on the outskirts of the city with hundreds of vendors selling various products including vintage clothes, antiques, handicrafts, and street food.
With the help of EOS R10, I was able to capture 4k videos of antique shops as well as food stalls in the market. Though personally, I felt that I could be more stable in my videos, I can’t imagine how shaky I was knowing that EOS R10 has Coordinated Control Image Stabilisation (IS) through the combination of the Movie Digital IS and Optical Image Stabilisation (IS) on a compatible lens. I would recommend this night market for those who are looking for unique clothing while sinking into the chill vibes of Bangkok.
Indy Market (Dao Khanong)
My last night’s market was at Indy Market (Dao Khanong). It is a trendy night market located in the Dao Khanong neighbourhood of Bangkok, Thailand that has gained popularity for its hip and artistic atmosphere, attracting a younger crowd. You can expect a variety of food vendors, bars, and shops selling clothing, accessories, and handmade crafts. With the lights being so bright at Indy Market, just using the shutter focus/auto focus didn’t do the place any justice.
As such, HDQ PQ Composite came to the rescue. In places, where there are so many bright lights, oftentimes, you will find that your photos come out with overexposed light streaks. With the help of a multi-shot (3) composite photo, the EOS R10 was able to tone down the overexposure to the bright lights.
Activities
Aside from the markets and the obvious Thai and Foot massages that took up my day, I head to two places that you might find not as hyped up as markets. If you are cafe hopping in Thonglor, to build up an appetite, why not head to the D-Sports stadium at Donki mall Thonglor. Or when you are within the Siam area and are tired of shopping, why not head to a cat cafe – Caturday.
D-Sports Stadium Thonglor is a modern sports complex located in the trendy Thonglor neighbourhood of Bangkok, Thailand. The complex offers a wide range of indoor and outdoor facilities for sports and fitness enthusiasts, including climbing, baseball, futsal and more.
My favourite activity there had to be the automated baseball lane where you are supposed to use the metal bats to hit on the incoming balls thrown at different speeds. As you can see here, EOS R10 captured the dynamicity of sports with the use of up to 23 FPS High-speed Continuous Shooting. For pet owners, this can be useful when your pets are off on their zoomies.
Caturday Cafe
Located near Siam Discovery Centre, Caturday Cafe is a cat cafe that offers a unique experience where visitors can enjoy food and drinks in the company of friendly cats. Aside from the cats, Caturday Cafe also serves a variety of food and drinks, including coffee, tea, and snacks that are included in your entry fee.
With EOS R10’s intelligent tracking and recognition system, the algorithm allows for easy detection of animals, understanding that there are challenges when photographing animals. For animal lovers, this is good news when capturing memories of your beloved pets.
Wat Phra Kaew
Of course not forgetting the temples within Thailand. I went to the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, also known as Wat Phra Kaew, which is one of the most important Buddhist temples located within the grounds of the Grand Palace in Bangkok. The temple houses the highly revered Emerald Buddha, a small statue of Buddha made of green jade, which is believed to have originated in India and was later brought to Thailand.
With the help of EOS R10, I was able to capture my experience within the temple grounds while managing to record a hint of the Emerald Buddha. The Emerald Buddha was housed on sacred grounds, as such,, it was hard to record the 66 cm sacred statue in its full glory.
Overall, loved Bangkok and would love to go back once I get a chance. Also, for those looking for an all-rounded camera that can handle all sorts of uses from vlogging to photography, the Canon EOS R10 is a gem.
