Nikon Enters Cinema Space with the All-New Nikon ZR

Nikon has officially stepped into the world of cinema cameras with the launch of the Nikon ZR, the first in its new Z CINEMA series.

Developed in collaboration with RED Digital Cinema, the ZR combines high-end cinematic performance with a compact, lightweight body designed for filmmakers on the move.

Compact Yet Powerful
Weighing just 540g, the Nikon ZR is one of the lightest full-frame cinema cameras in its class. Despite its small footprint, it integrates features typically reserved for larger rigs:

● Internal 6K RAW recording (R3D NE, N-RAW, ProRes RAW HQ)

● World’s first 32-bit float audio recording via built-in mic and 3.5mm input

● Dual Base ISO for versatile lighting conditions

● Frame.io cloud uploads through NX MobileAir

● Over two hours of continuous recording with efficient heat management

Its dust- and drip-resistant magnesium alloy body makes it rugged enough for both studio and outdoor shoots.

Cinematic Precision Built-In
The ZR features nine RED-curated Imaging Recipes, previewable in real time, giving filmmakers creative looks straight out of the camera. It also supports seven video formats, including 12-bit RAW, 6K/59.94p, and 4K/119.88p recording in REDWideGamutRGB and Log3G10 profiles.

A configurable shutter angle range (5.6° to 360°) ensures cinematic motion blur, while Nikon’s deep-learning autofocus system with 273 AF points offers 90% frame coverage. Face detection can identify subjects as small as 3% of the frame—ideal for wide shots and dynamic scenes.

Designed for Modern Productions
For today’s multi-camera and live workflows, the ZR provides:

● HDMI and USB-C connectivity with tally light support

● ON AIR / PREVIEW indicators for studio setups

● 5-axis in-body stabilisation (IBIS) for smooth footage

● Support for LUT previews on its 4-inch LCD

On the audio front, the ZR pioneers native 32-bit float recording with OZO Audio integration, offering five pickup patterns, including isolated voice and 360° modes. Nikon also introduced the ME-D10 shotgun microphone, powered via the camera’s digital shoe—requiring no battery or cables.

Availability and Community
The Nikon ZR is available through Nikon Singapore and authorised dealers. To mark the launch, Nikon also unveiled its Z CINEMA Instagram account (@zcinema_), where filmmakers can stay updated on products, events, and community news.
