From Gym Sessions to Work Calls with AirPods Max 2

I’ve been using the AirPods Max 2 across my daily routine, at the gym, during commutes, and for work calls, and it fits surprisingly well into all three. While it looks almost identical to the previous version, the real upgrades come from within. With the new H2 chip, Apple has added a layer of intelligence that you actually notice more in day-to-day use than on a spec sheet.

At the gym, it’s not your typical workout headphones, but it works well for lighter sessions. The sound is clean and balanced, making playlists feel controlled and easy to listen to over longer periods. Features like Adaptive Audio subtly adjust how much noise cancellation you need depending on your environment, so you don’t have to keep tweaking settings mid-workout. That said, the weight may be a hindrance for some users, especially during longer or more intense sessions. It’s secure on the head, but you’re always aware you’re wearing it.

Commuting is where the AirPods Max 2 really shine. The Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is now noticeably stronger, around 1.5 times more effective than before, and rain and busy streets fade into the background. At the same time, Conversation Awareness automatically lowers your audio when you start speaking, which is surprisingly useful for quick interactions like ordering breakfast before work. When you need to stay aware, Transparency mode feels more natural than before, and Loud Sound Reduction helps soften harsh environmental noise without affecting what you’re listening to.

The listening experience really stands out with certain tracks. Playing Chihiro by Billie Eilish on the AirPods Max 2 feels smooth and easy on the ears. The vocals come through soft and clear, sitting nicely over the background without feeling crowded. Even the quieter details in the track are noticeable, which makes it feel more layered without being distracting. The bass was also controlled yet strong, which made the music more immersive than it would have been.

For work and conference calls, the improvements are even more practical. Voice Isolation keeps your voice clear while reducing background noise, which makes a difference if you’re taking calls outside or in shared spaces. The headphones are comfortable enough for extended meetings, though again, the weight might become noticeable after a few hours. There are also some nice extras like Siri interactions, where you can nod or shake your head to respond to notifications hands-free.

If you’re into content creation, the AirPods Max 2 has a few unexpected capabilities. Apple is positioning it beyond just listening, with support for studio-quality audio recording and even acting as a camera remote. When connected via USB-C, it supports 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio, which is great for higher-quality listening across music, movies, and games. It’s also currently the only headphones that let you create and mix in Personalised Spatial Audio with head tracking, which could appeal to musicians and creators exploring immersive audio.

Battery life fits naturally into a busy day. A quick 15-minute charge gives about 1.5 hours of use, which is enough to get through a commute or a short session. It’s one of those small conveniences that ends up being genuinely useful.

There are just a few things to take note of. The headphones can be a little sensitive when switching between devices, so you might occasionally need to reconnect or do a quick reset to get everything back on track. The reset process, holding the Noise Control button and Digital Crown, is straightforward once you’re familiar with it. And like before, there’s still no dedicated power button, with the headphones relying on low-power mode instead.

Overall, the AirPods Max 2 works really well as an all-day companion. It’s especially strong for commuting and work, with the gym being more of a secondary use. The combination of improved ANC, smarter features powered by the H2 chip, and clean, detailed sound makes it easy to use across different parts of your day, just with a few small considerations like weight and occasional connectivity quirks.

The AirPods Max 2 currently retails for $749 and can be purchased from the Apple online store or the Apple Store.
