You wouldn’t expect a robot vacuum cleaner to play a part in home security, but here we are. Recently the LG HOM-BOT Turbo+ helped to scare off a burglar and alerted home owners of a burglary in Holon, Israel.
Robot Security? Is This Some Kind Of Sci-Fi Novel?
On April 29, Kobi Ozer was working in his office when he received photos of an intruder on his smartphone. His HOM-BOT had sent him the images via the LG SmartThinQ app. Thanks to its Home-Guard feature, the HOM-BOT took pictures after detecting unusual movement and sent them to Ozer.
The LG HOM-BOT Turbo+ is a robot vacuum cleaner featuring remote control and motion detection that works along with SmartThinQ. It cleans the house, avoiding collisions and covering every corner. As an added bonus, the device features home security functions – Home-View and Home-Guard – which monitor a home and give alerts in the event of a break-in or intrusion. The Home-View function allows people to view their homes with the front camera on the HOM-BOT. The Home-Guard function turns the robot into a home security device. When the HOM-BOT detects movement through its sensors, it sends five images, in sequence, to a mobile phone and alerts the user of unusual movements.
This is what happened at Ozer’s home. The HOM-BOT detected suspicious movement and started to take pictures once a burglar broke in. Once alerted, Ozer called the police and his neighbour. The burglar had fled after the HOM-BOT flashed its lights. Fortunately, nothing at home was missing or damaged.
