The Canon EOS 200D is immediately likeable, and it’s not only because of its colour, which is white. Granted that it may be a victim of accidental smudges due to this, the colour sets it apart from competitors. Another advantage the 200D has is that it is one of Canon’s smallest DSLR. Tipping the scales at about 406g (body only), this is a compact and sleek entry-level DSLR that is suitable for individuals who are just exploring the world of DSLR.
The 200D is really a breeze to hold. It’s ergonomically designed, and fits comfortably in smaller hands. Even with the bundled 18-55mm F/4-5.6 zoom lens, the weight of the camera remains highly manageable, thanks to the deep handgrip. The minimal top mounted controls are well positioned, and within easy reach of the fingers. These control include the combined movie / on / off switch, the exposure mode dial, the front control dial just behind the shutter release, which now comes in a PowerShot-style metal finish. There are also the dedicated one-touch ISO, display and Wi-Fi buttons.
Despite being an entry-level DSLR, powerful imaging technology drives the 200D. Think along the lines of a high-resolution 24.2 megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor and the latest DIGIC 7 image processor. The latter helps to push the standard ISO up, and together with the former, the 200D is capable of shooting from ISO 100-25,600. This means motion blur caused by slow shutter speeds, common in low light conditions, can be reduced, and excellent low and medium ISO qualities can be expected. There is also the option of cropping images without affecting image quality.
The 200D has an impressive start up time of 0.2 seconds, a continuous shooting speed of up to 5 frames per second as well as fast autofocusing with the Dual Pixel CMOS AF – great for snapping accuracte action shots. The small built-in flash is nicely flushed against the body when not in use, and pops up when needed.
One of Canon cameras’ selling points is the LCD monitor, and it is heartening to note that Canon has not skimped on the 200D’s LCD monitor, despite it being an entry-level DSLR. The one on the 200D is a 3 inch Vari-angle touch screen LCD monitor, which can be repositioned to take pictures from a variety of angles. The folks at Canon have added a nice touch – there’s an indent at the upper right of the monitor, allowing users to put the finger in to grab the screen more easily.
