The latest Tough camera does not deviate much from its predecessors in the design, and even its tough aspects are identical to the TG-4: IP6X dustproof, IPX8 waterproof, -10 degrees Celsius freezeproof, 100kgf crushproof, and 2.1 meters shockproof. The f/2.0 lens does not protrude (25-100mm, 4x optical zoom) and keeps the camera compact. The double locking mechanism on the battery and connector compartments has been redesigned to be more resistant to accidental unlocks during use, while the lens mounting ring is now easier to remove.
New functions include an additional control dial next to the shutter button. For most shooting modes, the dial lets you change the exposure compensation easily (aperture in aperture priority mode). The new Field Sensor System can display live environmental data even with the camera off, and by pressing the INFO button, the LCD screen displays time, compass, temperature, GPS coordinates, air pressure and altitude. Additionally, you can capture logs of the environmental data at all times, even in standby mode.
The Olympus Tough TG-5 is a reliable companion for outdoor trips and also displays tracking data on-demand. It fears no environmental condition, be it cold mountains or icy waters, and it can capture all sorts of situations from underwater to close-up macro, as well as high-speed and time lapse videos.
