Redefining Mobile Imaging: Leica Unveils the Leitzphone Powered by Xiaomi

Leica Camera AG unveils its first international smartphone, the Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi, bringing Leica’s iconic design language, imaging expertise and photographic philosophy into the mobile photography landscape.

For more than a century, Leica has enabled the creation of meaningful images, guided by precision, clarity and deep respect for the photographic moment. As imaging technology has evolved, Leica has continuously explored new ways to extend its expertise into emerging fields. Mobile imaging has long been part of this journey, not as a replacement for traditional photography, but as a complementary expression of it.

With the Leitzphone, Leica translates this commitment into a device designed for everyday use. It reflects the belief that photography today exists across contexts, sometimes through a dedicated camera, sometimes through the immediacy of a mobile moment, with each situation deserving the same dedication to image quality, intent and authenticity.

“The Leica Leitzphone demonstrates our vision for the future of photography,” said Matthias Harsch, CEO of Leica Camera AG. “It brings our design principles, our expertise in image processing and our photographic ethos into everyday life. We remain committed to the passion for photography that has defined Leica for generations.”

Leica Design and Photographic Intent
Designed by Leica, the Leitzphone follows the principle of reduction to the essential. A black fibreglass rear panel paired with a precisely knurled metal frame creates a restrained yet tactile design that is unmistakably Leica. The iconic red dot signifies both authorship and responsibility for the overall design experience.

A defining element is the mechanical camera ring, enabling physical interaction with the device similar to a traditional camera. The customisable ring provides continuous control over zoom, exposure value, ISO and shutter speed, and can also be used to select focal lengths or switch between Leica Looks, encouraging a deliberate and intuitive photographic workflow.

Advanced Camera System Shaped by Leica Standards
At the core of the Leitzphone is an advanced triple-camera system developed to meet Leica’s optical and imaging standards. It is based on the Vario-APO-Summilux 14–100mm f/1.67–2.9 ASPH. lens system, combining versatility with optical precision across focal lengths. This design is especially advantageous for telephoto photography — such as cityscapes or portrait work — where controlled chromatic aberration and high-contrast clarity are essential.

The main camera features a 1-inch sensor equipped with LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) technology, significantly expanding dynamic range by storing excess charge directly at the pixel level. The periscope telephoto module incorporates a large 200-megapixel sensor within a compact optical structure inspired by classic zoom lens design. It supports optical zoom from 75mm to 100mm, along with autofocus and optical image stabilisation.

Leica-Designed UI/UX and Image Aesthetics
Leica developed the system interface and camera experience of the Leitzphone, including the home screen, camera application and dedicated widgets. The camera app integrates thirteen Leica Looks, five Leica bokeh simulations and photo-centric widgets, reflecting Leica’s philosophy of clarity, restraint and focus on the image.

A dedicated Leica Essential Mode further reinforces this approach, offering digital reinterpretations of classic Leica aesthetics, including an M9-inspired colour profile and a monochrome profile inspired by Leica Monopan film, recreating their characteristic tonal depth within a modern imaging pipeline.

Leica contributes its optical expertise, colour science and imaging philosophy, while Xiaomi provides a powerful mobile platform for high-performance processing and efficient workflows. The result is an imaging experience defined by natural colour reproduction, tonal depth and visual coherence.

Image Authenticity and Protection
Aligned with Leica’s commitment to photographic integrity, the Leitzphone supports the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI).
