Insta360 Luna Ultra Brings 8K Leica-Powered Filmmaking to Your Pocket

Insta360 has officially unveiled the Luna Ultra, its most advanced gimbal camera to date, developed in collaboration with Leica to deliver professional-grade imaging, intelligent AI features, and exceptional stabilisation in a compact, everyday companion for creators and mobile filmmakers.

Combining Insta360’s expertise in action and 360-degree imaging with Leica’s renowned optical heritage, the Luna Ultra introduces a powerful dual-lens system, a 1-inch 8K image sensor, Leica Summicron optics, and a detachable OLED touchscreen, delivering cinematic-quality footage and versatile creative control in a lightweight device.

Professional Imaging Meets Leica Optics
At the heart of the Luna Ultra is a Leica Summicron main camera paired with a large 1-inch sensor, capable of recording ultra-high-resolution 8K video at 30 fps with Dolby Vision support. It also offers 10-bit I-Log recording, providing creators with greater flexibility for colour grading and post-production workflows.

Complementing the main camera is a dedicated telephoto lens featuring a 1/1.3-inch sensor and an F2.0 aperture. The system supports five focal lengths and delivers up to 12× zoom, including 6× lossless zoom, while producing natural-looking background separation and bokeh effects.

For photographers, Luna Ultra captures detailed 37MP UltraPhotos and expansive 200MP Scenic Panorama images. Low-light shooting is enhanced by Insta360’s PureVideo Mode, which uses advanced AI processing to reduce noise and improve brightness and detail in videos up to 4K at 60fps. Powering these capabilities is a new Triple AI Chip that handles complex image processing and enhances overall performance.

“Luna Ultra marks Insta360’s arrival in the gimbal camera space, backed by the full strength of our imaging expertise. We believe this category is ready for a new standard, defined by smarter technology, stronger performance, and a more intuitive user experience,” said Max Richter, VP of Marketing and Co-Founder of Insta360.

Compact Design with Advanced Stabilisation
Weighing just over 200 grams, the Luna Ultra is designed to be as portable as a modern smartphone, making it easy for creators to carry and capture moments on the go.

A standout feature is its industry-first detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen, allowing users to remotely monitor and control the camera with HD transmission from up to 20 metres away. This opens up more possibilities for solo creators and unique shooting angles.

The camera is equipped with a 1550mAh battery that provides up to four hours of shooting time and supports rapid charging, reaching 80% capacity in approximately 23 minutes. It includes 47GB of built-in storage and can be expanded with a microSD card of up to 1TB.

To ensure stable footage, Luna Ultra combines a mechanical 3-axis gimbal stabilisation system with electronic image stabilisation. It is further enhanced by Deep Track 5.0 AI tracking technology, which includes Auto Tracking, Active Zoom Tracking, Group Tracking, and Smart Framing to keep subjects sharp and perfectly positioned in every shot.

AI-Powered Creativity and Professional Workflows
Luna Ultra is designed not only for capturing footage but also for streamlining the creative process. The camera incorporates Leica’s signature colour science with Leica Natural, Leica Vivid, and Leica Chrome profiles, alongside cinematic filters for distinctive in-camera looks.

Professional users will appreciate support for ACES colour workflows, built-in timecode for multi-camera synchronisation, and compatibility with editing platforms such as Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro.

Additional features like QR Colour Share allow users to transfer colour settings between devices, while the Insta360 app’s AI-powered editing tools can automatically identify highlights and create ready-to-share videos.

For improved audio recording, Luna Ultra includes a built-in wind guard and supports direct connection to Insta360 microphone systems with single or dual-transmitter setups.

A range of accessories further expands its creative potential, including a POV Head Tracker for hands-free filming, Black Mist filters for a softer cinematic aesthetic, a Wide-Angle Lens that extends the field of view to 108 degrees, and ND filters for better exposure control and natural motion blur.

Six Years of Leica and Insta360 Imaging Collaboration
The launch of Luna Ultra represents the latest milestone in the six-year partnership between Insta360 and Leica, marking their fifth co-developed imaging product. By combining Leica’s iconic colour science and optical engineering with Insta360’s award-winning camera technology, the two companies aim to bring professional imaging capabilities into a new generation of compact AI-powered devices.

The Luna Ultra was officially unveiled at Leica’s headquarters in Wetzlar, Germany, highlighting the close collaboration behind Insta360’s first Leica co-engineered gimbal camera.

“This launch represents more than a new product announcement. It reflects the shared vision and long-term collaboration between Insta360 and Leica, combining optical heritage with a new generation of intelligent imaging technology,” said Marius Eschweiler, VP of Business Unit Mobile at Leica Camera AG.
