OPPO has announced its latest Reno series smartphones in Singapore, the OPPO Reno8 5G and Reno8 Pro 5G. The new “Portrait Expert” Reno8 series, powered by Dual Sony Flagship Sensors and many AI-enhanced photography features such as Ultra Night Video and Night Portrait, is meant to assist users to capture ultra-clear pictures in even the most difficult conditions.
The Reno8 series includes a Streamlined Unibody Design in addition to professional camera capabilities, providing a more refined texture and flagship-level design aesthetics. With the 80W SUPERVOOCTM with Battery Health Engine, an improved Super-Conductive VC Liquid Cooling System, and ColorOS 12.1, the Reno8 series offers users solid longevity, dependable performance, and an all-around smooth experience.
The Reno8 Pro 5G is also packed with MariSilicon X, OPPO’s first in-house designed, specialized imaging NPU, which enables several cutting-edge camera features. For a fluid flagship-level performance, the MediaTek Dimensity 1300 SoC powers the Reno8 5G, while the MediaTek Dimensity 8100-MAX 5G SoC powers the Reno8 Pro 5G.
Revolutionary Imaging Capabilities for Ultra-clear Portraits in Any Situation
On the Reno series, OPPO has consistently invested in photography technology R&D. According to customer insights, over 40% of Reno smartphone images are taken after 5 p.m. For videos, the number is considerably greater, at over 50%. As a result, OPPO has improved the camera on the current Reno series to improve the shooting experience in low-light conditions and allow customers to record every moment of their lives in vivid clarity.
With its formidable hardware foundations, the Reno8 series, as a Portrait Expert, takes ultra-clear portrait images and movies to new heights. Dual Sony Flagship Sensors — the IMX709 for the front camera and the IMX766 for the rear camera — are used in the Reno8 series.
The Sony IMX709 is an upgraded RGBW 32MP camera sensor that OPPO has customized. When compared to typical RGB sensors, it ensures a 60% increase in light intake and a 35% improvement in noise reduction. Together with OPPO’s self-designed Quadra Binning technology, every selfie will appear dynamically brilliant and sharp in low-light or backlit situations. For the first time, the IMX709 offers AutoFocus on the front camera, enabling 2x zoom when photographing selfies. With a minimum focal distance of 15cm, the front camera can capture ultra close-up photos, providing incredible detail in selfies.
The Sony IMX766 is a 50MP primary camera sensor with a 1.0um pixel size. It collects more light and ensures better image brightness in low-light conditions. This camera sensor, when combined with the All-Pixel Omni-Direction PDAF technology, improves focus speed, accuracy, and stability.
On a hardware level, the Dual Sony Flagship Sensors support the underlying DOL-HDR technology, which increases the dynamic range of videos by four times that of the traditional HDR algorithm. DOL-HDR technology allows for the near-simultaneous synthesis of long and short exposure frames, thus eliminating ghosting artefacts caused by movement.
In addition to the Dual Sony Flagship Sensors, the Reno8 Pro 5G includes OPPO’s first self-developed imaging NPU, MariSilicon X, which provides an enormous amount of dedicated computational power for the Reno8 Pro 5G’s imaging features while consuming even less power.
MariSilicon X, which is based on cutting-edge 6nm manufacturing technology and industry-leading DSA architecture, can deliver an astounding 18 trillion operations per second (18 TOPS) of dedicated image processing power. MariSilicon X can conduct lossless real-time 4K AI processing and up to 20bit HDR fusion in the RAW domain, with up to 8dB signal-to-noise ratio for photos, thanks to its high data throughput and CPU capability. MariSilicon X, with its ability to immediately process images in the lossless RAW domain, serves as an unrivalled basis for Reno8 Pro 5G’s ultimate imaging experience.
In addition to hardware advancements, the OPPO Reno8 series includes a suite of portrait capabilities powered by leading AI technology.
In low-light conditions, the Ultra Night Video algorithm improves image quality, colour expression, and facial performance, resulting in clear and bright night portrait films. It is set to shoot at night automatically. Ultra HDR Video mode eliminates overexposure of bright areas while enhancing dark areas with fine details, resulting in natural portrait videos with vibrant colours. It is activated by default in scenarios with a high illumination ratio. Night Portrait employs the industry-leading Turbo RAW algorithm for AI noise reduction in the RAW domain, resulting in clean and pure portrait photographs.
Reno8 Pro 5G, which is powered by MariSilicon X and the Dual Sony Flagship Sensors, also brings 4K video shooting to a smartphone for the first time at this pricing point, featuring 4K Ultra Night Video and 4K Ultra HDR Video.
Other new features of the Reno8 series help to improve overall imaging quality. AI Portrait Retouching can recognize 193 face identification points to facilitate accurate video retouching and produce natural portrait effects, thanks to the inbuilt AI-enhanced retouching algorithms. The Reno8 series also has features like Portrait Mode, Hyperlapse, and 960fps AI Slow-motion for those who wish to add movie-quality effects to their images and videos, offering users more creative freedom behind the camera and enabling them to be a “portrait expert.”
Unique Streamlined Unibody for the Flagship Design Aesthetics
The Reno8 5G and Reno8 Pro 5G have a Streamlined Unibody Design for the first time in the Reno series, eliminating the separate camera ‘bump’ frequently found on other smartphones. A flawless 75-degree micro-arc transition has been formed around the camera on the integrated streamlined glass back cover using OPPO’s proprietary high-temperature, high-pressure hot forging process. The Reno8 series also includes OPPO’s proprietary Battery Health Engine, which automatically adjusts the charging current and voltage through real-time monitoring to extend battery life. This revolutionary technology increases battery life to up to 1600 charge and discharge cycles, or approximately four years of ordinary use. Furthermore, the Reno8 series includes 5-Layer Charging Protection, which safeguards the charging cycle from the adapter to the cable to the battery. The Reno8 Pro 5G has also received TÜV Rheinland’s Safe Fast-Charge System Certification for its exceptional overall safety performance.
Furthermore, the Reno8 5G has a Super-Conductive Vapor Chamber (VC) Liquide Cooling System, whereas the Reno8 Pro 5G has an Ultra-Conductive Cooling System, which uses industry-leading materials to significantly improve heat dissipation to ensure that the phone remains cool and runs smoothly at all times.
The MediaTek Dimensity 1300 5G-integrated SoC powers the OPPO Reno8 5G. The octa-core SoC is built on the 6nm process and incorporates an ARM Cortex-A78 ultra-core that performs at up to 3GHz to provide maximum computational power. The typical configuration has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of ROM.
The MediaTek Dimensity 8100-MAX integrated 5G SoC powers the OPPO Reno8 Pro 5G. Built on the industry-leading 5nm process, the octa-core SoC provides more powerful performance while consuming less power. The Reno8 Pro 5G has 12GB of RAM and 256GB of ROM storage. For the first time in the Reno series, the smartphone also features a very efficient LPDDR5 read and write storage management technology.
Both the Reno8 5G and Reno8 Pro 5G have received the TÜV SÜD 36-Month Fluency Rating A certification, which means that the smartphone will continue to run smoothly even after three years of use.
The Reno8 series is also completely loaded with gaming-specific system-level optimizations for mobile gamers. OPPO collaborated with PUBG to develop a Background Update function that enables background downloading for games, allowing users to avoid being stuck on a downloading screen. Users can enjoy their most frequently played games in a smoother and more immersive manner with pro-level gaming capabilities such as 1000Hz Ultra Touch Response in Reno8 5G and 90Hz high-refresh mode for PUBG Mobile in Reno8 Pro 5G.
