Vanessa Takes the Sony 4K Action Cam to Bali

This year, I did a print advertisement shoot for the Sony FDR-X3000 4K Action Cam, and I was privileged to take it along for my holiday in Bali. Here’s what I have to share.

Filming in 4K with Minimal Shake

In Bali, I tried all sorts of extremely exciting water sports, including wakeboarding, surfing, white-water rafting and parasailing. These are the kinds of things I rarely do in my life – checking off more things on my bucket list – so of course, I have to document them! Not just for the ‘gram, but for keepsake.

I brought the Sony Action Cam and its accessories – Finger Grip, Underwater Housing to make sure it’s waterproof, and the selfie stick tripod. For different sports, I used different accessories to find the most secure grip, and the underwater housing was always fixed in place of course!

I’m grateful that the Action Cam lets me film in 4K for the best quality footage, and even when the boat was bouncing up and down the choppy water, my footage didn’t turn out bad with the Balanced Optical SteadyShot that stabilises the videos.

View it from the Live-View Remote

When the camera was moving, filming at all sorts of angles, and even pointing at myself, how would I know how the resulting videos look like? It’s possible with the new compact remote controller that doubles up as a mountable controller. It’s really convenient as I can mount the camera elsewhere to take a selfie, but frame and position myself properly with the remote controller. This was especially useful when I needed to take wide shots, which I couldn’t do just by stretching my arms out for a selfie.

Tough under Extreme Conditions

It takes a lot of trust in the quality of the camera and its case to bring it along for surfing. That’s right, into the water. The Action Cam’s body alone is splashproof and freezeproof, so it can survive filming by the pool in my hotel. The Underwater Housing is dustproof, shockproof and waterproof to 60 metres to withstand the waves of Seminyak beach. After learning how to surf (and falling off the board countless times), I finally got a few nice video clips of me (successfully) riding a wave!

All in all, I can’t imagine my Bali trip without the Sony Action Cam. It comes with Wi-Fi so that I can instantly transfer the pictures and videos to my phone to upload them as Instastories! Here’s a video montage of the trip:
