In the ever-evolving world of motorsports, where speed and innovation collide, Formula 1® has found an unparalleled partner in Lenovo, the global technology giant. As the pinnacle of automotive racing hurtles forward at breakneck speeds, Lenovo’s cutting-edge technology is seamlessly propelling Formula 1® into the future, ushering in a new era of precision, connectivity, and sustainability.
A Legacy of Innovation
From the roaring engines of the past to the lightning-fast machines of today, Formula 1® has always embodied innovation. In a sport where milliseconds count and the boundaries of engineering are pushed to the limit, every facet of the Formula 1® ecosystem demands the highest calibre of technological prowess.
“Innovation is embedded in everything we do,” asserts Pete Samara, Director of Strategic Technical Ventures at Formula 1®. “From the car to the track, to the broadcast and digital products, innovation has to be at the heart of everything we do every single day.”
Lenovo: The Driving Force Behind Formula 1®
In this high-octane environment, Formula 1® found an invaluable partner in Lenovo. Behind the scenes, an intricate dance of coordination takes place, ensuring that the gears of the racing machine mesh flawlessly. Chris Roberts, IT Director at Formula 1®, explains, “We’ve got to make a million and one moving pieces synchronise and all come together in perfect harmony for race weekend. Lenovo’s very much a one-stop shop for us, which is fantastic.”
Lenovo’s role extends far beyond hardware provision; it is the foundation upon which Formula 1® builds its technological empire. Servers, edge devices, laptops, workstations, and tablets are just a few of the tools that Lenovo supplies, transforming raw data into high quality content for F1 fans worldwide.
“One of the great things about our partnership with Lenovo is the sustainability initiative,” says Amie Smith, Senior IT Manager at F1. “We utilise Lenovo’s Asset Recovery Services, which means that we know that our hardware is going to be given a second life with users who will make the most of it, or is being recycled. And that helps us towards our goals of being more sustainable.”
Data-Driven Performance
In a sport where success hinges on the smallest details, data is king. Formula 1® is a data-driven endeavour, with each race car generating a torrent of information during every race. From G-forces to steering angles, braking to throttle control, every aspect is meticulously recorded. Lenovo’s technology not only aids in collecting this data but also facilitates its seamless integration into the race experience.
Fans are no longer mere spectators; they are part of the action. Lenovo bridges the gap between the racetrack and the Media & Technology Centre, translating raw data into real-time, captivating on-screen graphics. “Racing to me is all about energy, innovation, technology, and excitement,” says Samara. “Fans like the fact that Formula 1® is always on the edge of innovation, trying to do something new all the time, whether that’s with the cars, with the fans, with the data.”
A Future of Speed and Sustainability
As Formula 1® hurtles towards the future, Lenovo remains a stalwart partner in the journey. The partnership is not just about performance; it’s about sustainability. Lenovo’s Asset Recovery Services (ARS) play a pivotal role in F1’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint. Through responsible hardware recycling and secure data destruction, Lenovo helps F1 achieve its sustainability goals, embodying the spirit of progress that defines both organisations.
“The partnership with Lenovo is helping us be more efficient and effective across our whole organisation,” says Roberts. “It allows the IT teams to pick products from their vast portfolio, to communise against our organisation’s needs. Our vision is to create the world-leading spectacle of motorsport for our fans. Technology plays a massive part in that for us because we need to engage our fans on multiple levels, on multiple platforms, across the world. So, Lenovo is the core of everything we do.”
A Seamless Connection
In the grand tapestry of Formula 1®, Lenovo’s technology forms the thread that weaves everything together. From the heart-pounding action on the track to the intricacies of data collection and sustainability initiatives, Lenovo is the common thread connecting it all. With every Grand Prix, Formula 1® and Lenovo are forging a future where technology and innovation intersect, creating a faster, smarter, and more sustainable sport for generations to come.
The Interview
NXT had the privilege of sitting down with Mr. Nigel Lee, the esteemed Country General Manager of Lenovo Singapore ahead of the Formula 1 race in Singapore. With his wealth of experience and deep knowledge of Lenovo’s innovative contributions to the Formula 1 world, we delved into the dynamic intersection of technology and motorsports.
Can you tell us more about Lenovo’s technology and how it enhances the performance and overall racing experience for Formula 1?
Lenovo plays a crucial role in enhancing the Formula 1 experience in various ways. Our technology provides the F1 organization with critical high computing power, which is essential for the rapid creation of high-quality content during the race. High-performance computing hardware solutions are deployed for video applications, including graphics, editing, and supporting on-premise broadcast solutions. This ensures that fans receive the best possible visual experience.
Additionally, we provide high-performing server solutions for video transmission applications and general broadcast command and control applications. This not only helps with the seamless broadcast of the race but also enables Formula 1 to collect and manage data efficiently. Data collection and storage are fundamental in creating more engaging content for fans and supporting various broadcast applications. So, in essence, Lenovo’s technology empowers Formula 1 to capture the excitement of the sport and deliver it to fans worldwide in a compelling way.
Can you highlight any innovations by Lenovo that have resulted in more immersive and interactive experiences for F1 enthusiasts, whether they are watching races or following the sport online?
Our high-end Lenovo workstations and high-performance computing hardware and server solutions are at the heart of many innovations that enhance the Formula 1 experience for fans. These technologies play a pivotal role in graphics creation, editing, and various video applications that are critical for supporting broadcast command and control. As a result, Formula 1 races become even more visually stunning and engaging for fans.
Furthermore, Formula 1 generates a massive volume of data during each race, with each car producing millions of data points. Lenovo’s servers, storage, edge computing, and device solutions enable Formula 1 teams to capture this wealth of data. This includes data on G-forces, steering angles, brake impacts, throttle inputs, as well as audio and video from cameras and microphones. This data is instantly made available to the broadcast team, allowing them to create better, more engaging content for fans, whether they are watching on television or following the sport online. So, Lenovo’s technology essentially enriches the fan experience by bringing them closer to the action and providing insights they’ve never had before.
How is Lenovo contributing to Formula 1’s sustainability efforts, such as reducing the carbon footprint or promoting environmentally friendly practices?
Sustainability is a top priority, and Lenovo is actively contributing to Formula 1’s efforts in this area. One notable initiative is our Asset Recovery Services (ARS).
