Weekend getaway to KL with Canon EOS R50

With Good Friday stacked with the weekends, there’s no doubt many of us are heading across the border to Johor Bahru, Malacca, Kuala Lumpur and more. Well, for myself, I headed over to Kuala Lumpur to enjoy a weekend getaway. To capture memories from the weekend, Canon was kind enough to let me use the new Canon EOS R50. Also, in this article, I’ll be using the aspect ratio of 3:2, when using the R50, feel free to change it to whatever fits you best.

Before we get into the key KL locations, here’s a quick overview of Canon’s new EOS R50. Canon’s newly released EOS R50 is an entry-level camera that is perfect for vloggers and creators who want to create high-quality content without the technical expertise required to operate a camera. The camera is lightweight at around 375g, making it perfect for vlogging on the go, and comes with a host of new intelligent creative features that make it even easier to make the most of the camera’s imaging capabilities. In this article, I’ll be sharing some key tourist spots while reviewing how the EOS R50 worked out for me.

Huskiss Cafe

Huskiss is a husky cafe located in Kelana Jaya, Malaysia. It is the country’s first husky cafe and is home to seven huskies, two malamutes, and one Samoyed. The dogs are housed in a large air-conditioned room at the back of the cafe, and guests can sit on bean bags while interacting with the friendly dogs.

With the intelligent subject, detection features the EOS R50 has, I was able to capture clear shots of this Malamute resting self. It can get pretty unpredictable and maintaining a focused shot can be pretty challenging when cameras aren’t aware of animal faces.

Subject Blur Guide (Panning Guide)

With 10 dogs in a limited space, you are bound to have them playing with each other while interacting with the guests in the space. There’s a lot of movement that comes with that and it typically can be hard to capture clear shots when dogs are moving so often. With the help of the Panning Guide feature found in Scenes (SCN), I was able to capture such a clear frontal shot even though this pup was running across the room to find his siblings. The Panning Guide works as the visual display in-camera will guide you with coloured lines to match the subject’s movement.

Lastly, what’s going to a dog cafe if you didn’t swoon over the dogs while taking a video? Thanks to the Movie Image Stabiliser mode while combined with the Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system that has Animal Subject detection, the videos were smooth and captured the fun when headed to a dog cafe.

Jalan Alor is a popular food street in Kuala Lumpur known for its seafood restaurants and hawker stalls, making it a favourite spot for food lovers, cultural enthusiasts, and photographers. Despite once being a red-light area, Jalan Alor has transformed into a sought-after culinary destination offering traditional cuisine at affordable prices. It is considered one of the busiest food streets in the world, offering a vast range of delicacies.

With such bright lights, it’s no shocker that the HDR PQ was able to capture clear details that couldn’t be seen in the Auto mode. By intelligently combining 4 shots into one, bright blinding lights were a piece of cake when snapping this shot.

Here’s a quick video of the bustling street. All thanks to EOS R50’s amazing vlogging capabilities and the two different Movie IS (Image Stabilizer) levels, I was able to capture a steady memory with much stability that came from digitally performing 5-axis camera shake correction, enhanced when combined with an RF lens with in-lens IS. This auto-level mode automatically corrects horizontal tilt, saving time from a manual correction in another app.

Chinatown (Petaling Street)

Petaling Street, located in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown, is a bustling market and shopping district that is popular with both locals and tourists. It is known for its vibrant atmosphere, traditional Chinese architecture, and a wide variety of goods for sale, including clothing, electronics, souvenirs, and street food. The street is lined with vendors and stalls selling everything from fake designer goods to authentic Chinese delicacies.

Instead of covering the whole street, let me share my favourite stall with you – Kim Soya Bean. Not sure about you but soya bean milk is a nostalgic drink that I love to have no matter the occasion. Be it breakfast, lunch or dinner, it complements my meal. With that being said, Kim Soya Bean is a must-go for all travellers to get a cup or a bottle of soya bean milk or a Tau Fu Fah with Gula Melaka syrup. It translates the local flavour into just a drink.

With the use of the Canon EOS R50, comparing Intelligent Auto, Manual Shutter and HDR PQ, HDR PQ once again shows its prowess in capturing shots with sharp bright lighting while delivering clear and crisp details.

The Kuala Lumpur Petronas Twin Towers are the tallest in the world, standing at 452 meters high. They are an iconic landmark of Kuala Lumpur and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Malaysia. Lucky for me, I was staying just across the twin towers at Trades Hotel to be able to capture these shots while comparing Intelligent Auto, Manual Shutter and HDR PQ. In my opinion, the shot with Manual Shutter trumped the other photos as there isn’t much flare from the bright lights and allows me to capture the grandness of the twin towers. However, if you are a fan of the skyline, then the HDR PQ might just be your best friend.

What’s a trip to KL without a quick selfie shot with the Twin Towers? Thankfully with the Vari-angle LCD plus HDR PQ, I was able to capture a clear shot of myself with the Twin Towers. The Vari- Angle LCD made it much easier to capture a selfie, knowing where my angle was and where the twin towers were placed. Also with HDR PQ, the harsh day backlight was significantly reduced to capture a forever memory.

Overall, it’s a great entry camera for vlogging as well as capturing clear crisp shots of yourself or animals or even landscapes. It was easy to use and I got a hang of it once I knew where all the features were located and what it was meant to be used for. The Canon EOS R50 Body is retailing at $979 while the package with the Kit lens is retailing for $1139 and you can get it at https://shop.sg.canon/.
