Sony Xperia XZ Premium Review: Pocket 4K Goodness

Every smartphone needs some features to distinguish itself from the competition. With the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, Sony brings the super slow-motion feature on the RX100 series to the smartphones. Although it can only capture a fraction of a second with each trigger, the resultant slow-mo footage is almost 6 seconds. Within the same video session, it is possible to trigger multiple sessions of the slow-motion capture. I just need a gap of 2 seconds before I can fire another 960fps capture.

The other feature is the 5.5-inch 4K UHD display with HDR and sRGB with a 138 percent spectrum, offering the most detailed mobile experience when watching ultra high definition video content. The colour tone and contrast are stunning without looking over-saturated or over-sharpened. Sony maintains the thick bezels that are actually practical for gripping the phone without touching the display. Something’s got to go, and for XZ Premium, one has to embrace its size. It is hard to believe that a smartphone of this dimension houses just a 5.5-inch display.

Audiophiles will not be disappointed with the audio processor that rivals the Sony Walkman series. The Xperia XZ Premium supports high-resolution audio files up to DSD, and LDAC wireless audio codec. The front-facing stereo speakers deliver clear and good-sounding audio.

As an Android smartphone, the UI feels smoother, the pre-installed apps and guides are welcoming for the consumer who is new to Xperia. The battery management is intelligent enough to switch to slow-charge when plugged in overnight. The remaining battery estimate is also very accurate after monitoring a few days of your usage patterns, and I have no problems with the phone lasting the entire day.

With a reflective glass back and mirror-like finishing, the Xperia XZ Premium is simply eye-catching. The Corning Gorilla Glass 5 front and back is surprisingly easy to maintain because of the oleophobic coating, and hairline scratches are hardly visible given the reflective design.

Verdict

Rating 4.5/5

Sony Xperia smartphones are uniquely designed unlike most other manufacturers. For fans of this Japan marquee brand, the Xperia XZ Premium is a no-compromise against the competitors.
