In the world of haute horology, where innovation is measured in fractions of a millimetre, Konstantin Chaykin continues to redefine the limits of watchmaking. Following his groundbreaking 2024 creation, the independent watchmaker now unveils the ThinKing Mystery, an ultra-thin mechanical watch that blends technical mastery with a strikingly expressive design.
At just 1.65 mm thick, the ThinKing Mystery stands among the thinnest mechanical watches ever created. But beyond its remarkable slimness lies a deeper story. This is not merely an evolution of form, but a transformation of process, where precision engineering becomes a repeatable art.
The journey from achievement to method is what sets the ThinKing Mystery apart. Ultra-thin watchmaking demands a fundamentally different approach, where even microscopic deviations can compromise the entire construction. Every component in the watch operates within critically tight tolerances, requiring meticulous hand-finishing and a highly controlled assembly process. The case alone undergoes approximately 40 stages of machining and verification, reflecting a level of engineering discipline more commonly associated with aerospace than traditional horology.
At the heart of the ThinKing Mystery is its most captivating feature, a transparent interpretation of Chaykin’s signature “Wristmon” display. Inspired by the iconic Joker series, the watch retains its playful personality while introducing a new level of technical sophistication. The signature “eyes” are now rendered entirely transparent, with sapphire discs that appear to float effortlessly above the dial, driven by an unseen mechanism beneath.
This illusion draws from Chaykin’s earlier work, including the Mystery 1000 Jewels, and pays homage to the legendary illusionist Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin. However, this is not just visual theatre. The engineering behind it replaces traditional wheel-driven systems with solid sapphire discs, stabilised by three guiding rollers. This reduces mechanical deviation while enhancing precision, resulting in a display that is both visually intriguing and mechanically refined.
Despite its extreme thinness, the ThinKing Mystery is engineered for structural integrity. The case itself functions as a load-bearing component, crafted from a high-performance non-magnetic alloy that resists deformation. The movement, calibre K.23-3.1, is fully integrated into the caseback, which doubles as the mainplate, maximising space efficiency without compromising performance.
One of the watch’s most notable innovations is its dual balance system arranged within a single plane. Featuring interlocking toothed rims, this configuration ensures stable oscillation and efficient energy transfer. Enhancements such as a reinforced ultra-thin barrel and a redesigned arbour with an overrunning clutch further improve durability and contribute to a power reserve of 38 hours.
Even the strap has been thoughtfully engineered. Designed specifically for this watch, it incorporates titanium stiffeners and elastic inserts to minimise stress on the ultra-thin case, ensuring both comfort and longevity.
In keeping with its minimalist philosophy, the ThinKing Mystery omits a traditional crown. Instead, it is paired with two dedicated tools for winding and time-setting, each equipped with safety mechanisms to prevent overwinding. This approach preserves the watch’s clean silhouette while reinforcing its identity as a precision instrument.
Limited to just 12 pieces worldwide, the Konstantin Chaykin ThinKing Mystery is priced at SGD 750,000, including taxes.
