Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max Supercharge the Most Demanding Pro Workflows

Apple has introduced M5 Pro and M5 Max, the world’s most advanced chips for pro laptops, powering the new MacBook Pro. Built using a new Apple-designed Fusion Architecture, the chips represent a monumental leap forward for Apple silicon, combining cutting-edge CPU and GPU technologies with expanded AI capabilities and higher memory bandwidth. Designed for professionals tackling complex simulations, advanced 3D rendering, AI model development and large-scale code compilation, M5 Pro and M5 Max push the limits of performance while maintaining Apple’s hallmark power efficiency.

Built on Apple’s New Fusion Architecture
At the core of M5 Pro and M5 Max is Apple’s all-new Fusion Architecture, a state-of-the-art design that connects two third-generation 3-nanometer dies into a single system on a chip (SoC). Using advanced packaging technology with high bandwidth and low latency interconnects, the architecture integrates a powerful CPU, scalable next-generation GPU, Media Engine, unified memory controller, Neural Engine and Thunderbolt 5 capabilities into one seamless platform.

This innovative approach allows Apple to scale performance dramatically while preserving the unified memory architecture and efficiency that define Apple silicon. The result is a massive increase in compute power tailored for the most demanding professional workflows.

Apple’s Fastest CPU Cores Ever
M5 Pro and M5 Max introduce a new 18-core CPU architecture featuring six super cores — the world’s fastest CPU cores for single-threaded performance — alongside 12 all-new performance cores optimised for power-efficient, multithreaded workloads.
The super cores, first introduced in M5, feature increased front-end bandwidth, a new cache hierarchy and enhanced branch prediction, delivering exceptional responsiveness. Together, the super cores and performance cores provide up to 30 per cent faster performance for pro workloads compared to the previous generation, and up to 2.5 times higher multithreaded performance than M1 Pro and M1 Max.

For professionals analysing complex data sets, compiling large codebases in Xcode, or running demanding simulations, the new CPU architecture ensures MacBook Pro handles intensive tasks with speed and efficiency.

Next-Generation GPU with Neural Accelerators
M5 Pro and M5 Max scale up the next-generation GPU architecture first introduced in M5. The GPU features a Neural Accelerator in each core and significantly higher unified memory bandwidth, enabling more than four times the peak GPU compute for AI compared to the previous generation.

Graphics performance sees a substantial uplift as well. Compared to M4 Pro and M4 Max, the new chips deliver up to 35 per cent higher performance in apps using ray tracing, thanks to Apple’s third-generation ray-tracing engine. Enhanced shader cores with second-generation dynamic caching and hardware-accelerated mesh shading further boost advanced visual effects and 3D rendering performance.

For creative professionals and engineers working in applications like Cinema 4D, Vectorworks and LM Studio, the result is dramatically faster rendering, smoother simulations and enhanced AI-powered workflows.

M5 Pro: Power for Complex Professional Workflows
M5 Pro is designed for users such as data modellers, post-production sound designers, engineers and STEM students who require strong processing power, robust graphics and ample unified memory.

Scaling up from the base M5 chip, M5 Pro pairs the 18-core CPU with an up-to-20-core GPU. It supports up to 64GB of unified memory with bandwidth reaching 307GB/s. Compared to M4 Pro, M5 Pro delivers over four times the peak GPU compute for AI and up to 20 per cent higher graphics performance, while offering up to 35 per cent uplift in ray-traced applications.

This makes M5 Pro ideal for handling massive datasets, running complex MATLAB computations, rendering detailed 3D models and accelerating professional audio and video production workflows.

M5 Max: Unmatched Performance for Elite Users
M5 Max is engineered for professionals such as 3D animators, app developers and AI researchers whose workloads demand maximum GPU compute and the highest unified memory bandwidth available in a pro laptop.

Pairing the 18-core CPU with an up-to-40-core GPU, M5 Max doubles the GPU core count of M5 Pro. It supports up to 128GB of unified memory with bandwidth up to 614GB/s, enabling seamless work with complex scenes, massive datasets and high-token generation for large language models.

Compared to M4 Max, M5 Max offers up to 15 per cent higher multithreaded CPU performance and up to 20 per cent better graphics performance. For AI tasks, it delivers over four times the peak GPU compute compared to the previous generation and more than six times the peak GPU compute compared to M1 Max. In ray-traced workflows, users can experience up to 30 per cent improved graphics performance.

With these capabilities, M5 Max empowers professionals to unlock new creative dimensions and accelerate AI-driven innovation directly onthe device.

Advanced Technologies Built In
Both M5 Pro and M5 Max integrate a range of advanced technologies to further enhance performance and functionality. A faster 16-core Neural Engine with higher memory bandwidth accelerates on-device AI features and Apple Intelligence capabilities. Apple’s latest Media Engine supports hardware-accelerated H.264 and HEVC, AV1 decode, and ProRes encode and decode, optimising video workflows.

The chips also support Memory Integrity Enforcement, an industry-first, always-on memory safety protection that maintains security without compromising performance. In addition, each Thunderbolt 5 port is backed by a dedicated custom-designed controller on the chip, delivering one of the most capable Thunderbolt 5 implementations in the industry.

A New Standard for Pro Performance
With M5 Pro and M5 Max, Apple continues to redefine what’s possible in a pro laptop. By combining the new Fusion Architecture, the world’s fastest CPU cores, a next-generation GPU with integrated Neural Accelerators and unprecedented unified memory bandwidth, the new MacBook Pro becomes the ultimate powerhouse for professionals.

Available for pre-order starting tomorrow, with availability beginning March 11, MacBook Pro powered by M5 Pro and M5 Max sets a new benchmark for performance, efficiency and on-device AI in the professional computing space.
