Sony FX2 Joins Cinema Line: Compact Powerhouse for Pro-Level Filmmakers

Sony has officially unveiled the FX2 (model ILME-FX2), the newest addition to its Cinema Line family of digital cameras. Positioned as a versatile, entry-level option for content creators, solo shooters, and small production teams, the FX2 brings the cinematic capabilities of Sony’s premium gear into a more accessible and compact package. Built based on user feedback, the FX2 maintains Sony’s core mission of delivering emotional, authentic visual storytelling through its advanced features and filmmaker-focused design.

Full-Frame Power with Creative Flexibility
The FX2 houses a 33MP back-illuminated Exmor R™ full-frame sensor, offering up to 15+ stops of dynamic range with S-Log3 and beautiful bokeh effects. Its Dual Base ISO (800/4000) supports high-quality image capture in diverse lighting conditions, while the ISO can expand up to 102400 for low-light shoots.

Supporting multiple formats like 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra and XAVC S-I DCI 4K, the FX2 provides the versatility needed for both cinematic and broadcast-ready workflows. Extended recording up to 13 hours in 4K 60p is possible thanks to its internal cooling fan. Variable frame rate options allow for cinematic slow motion: up to 60fps in 4K and 120fps in Full HD.

Solo-Friendly Design, Pro-Level Control
Mirroring the familiar form factor of the FX3 and FX30, the FX2 features a compact, flat-top body with three built-in mounting points for cageless setups. It also includes the detachable XLR-H1 handle for handheld control.

Weighing just 679g and measuring 129.7 x 77.8 x 103.7 mm, it’s optimised for single-operator shooting. The new Real-time Recognition AF supports intelligent subject tracking for humans, animals, birds, and vehicles.

Features like AF Assist, focus breathing compensation, and customizable focus transitions add cinematic control, while built-in Active and Dynamic Active stabilisation ensures steady footage even in handheld scenarios.

Advanced Monitoring and On-Set Workflow Tools
The FX2 features a 3.68 M-dot tiltable EVF with a deep eyepiece for immersive shooting, alongside a vari-angle 3.0-inch touchscreen LCD. The updated “BIG6” menu interface allows quick access to critical settings, while built-in tally lamps indicate recording status.

LUT support, S-Cinetone as default, and Picture Profile presets streamline colour monitoring and grading workflows. Support for anamorphic lenses with 1.3x/2.0x desqueeze, plus vertical shooting orientation metadata for social media, rounds out the package for modern content demands.

Seamless Audio and Connectivity
The FX2 offers professional audio inputs, including two XLR/TRS terminals and a 3.5mm mic jack for four-channel 24-bit audio. It supports 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit HDMI output and 16-bit RAW output, plus fast USB 10 Gbps transfers and USB PD charging. Streaming and remote production are also supported via built-in USB and LAN/Wi-Fi (2.4GHz and 5GHz), making it a strong option for hybrid production environments.

Sustainability and Accessibility in Focus
In line with Sony’s “Road to Zero” initiative, the FX2 is produced in facilities powered by renewable energy. Accessibility features such as Screen Reader, Display Magnification, tactile button designs, and a touch-friendly interface ensure usability for all creators. The FX2 supports an inclusive, intuitive experience without compromising on professional features.
