Continuing its celebrated revival, DANIEL ROTH unveils the Extra Plat Souscription, a timepiece that draws a direct line to the brand’s origins and founder’s vision. Following the success of the Tourbillon Souscription, this latest creation once again partners with La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton.
A pure expression of functional elegance, the Extra Plat Souscription is inspired by a concept close to Mr. Daniel Roth’s heart: the ultra-thin dress watch. First conceptualised in the 1980s and realised in 1990, the Extra Plat was among Mr. Roth’s earliest designs.
Today, the new model pays homage to that legacy, staying true to the aesthetic codes of the original while introducing a completely new movement developed exclusively for this watch, the DR002.
A Faithful Tribute to the Original
The Extra Plat Souscription captures the unmistakable style of Daniel Roth’s early work. Crafted in 18k yellow gold, the case measures 35.5mm wide and 38.6mm long, identical to the Tourbillon Souscription, but with a slimmer profile at just 7.70mm thick. Its defining double-ellipse silhouette is enhanced by a centred godron and gently rounded, downward-arching lugs for both visual harmony and ergonomic comfort.
The construction process remains deeply traditional. Each lug is individually crafted and hand-soldered to the case middle, preserving the artisanal methods emblematic of classical watchmaking.
Equally meticulous is the handmade guilloché dial, fashioned from solid 18k yellow gold. Decorated with a clou de Paris motif and a filet sauté border, the dial is produced entirely in-house at La Fabrique du Temps using restored antique machinery. Every dial requires approximately 10 hours of careful handwork by a single artisan, resulting in a masterpiece of craftsmanship. A deep blue hue is used for the printed Roman numerals and serial number, perfectly complementing the heat-blued hour and minute hands.
A New Movement Rooted in Tradition
Inside the Extra Plat Souscription beats the DR002 calibre, an entirely new ultra-thin form movement designed specifically for this model. Echoing the double-ellipse shape of the case, the DR002 embodies the spirit of classical haute horlogerie.
Built with uncompromising traditional techniques, the DR002 features hand-finished bridges with rounded, polished bevels (anglage) and sharp interior angles. In addition to its visual refinement, the movement was carefully tuned for tactile excellence, with a hand-finished steel winding click that delivers a satisfying, precise feel when winding the watch.
Despite its classical inspiration, the DR002 incorporates sophisticated mechanics. It’s a free-sprung 4Hz balance wheel with variable inertia regulation that ensures outstanding stability and accuracy. Meanwhile, a single large mainspring barrel offers an impressive 65-hour power reserve, making the watch perfect for daily wear or an entire weekend without winding.
In keeping with the spirit of discretion that defined the original Extra Plat, the movement is hidden behind a solid 18k yellow gold caseback, maintaining the understated elegance that Mr. Roth championed.
Limited to just 20 pieces, the DANIEL ROTH Extra Plat Souscription is priced at SGD 75,000 inclusive of tax.
