Premium Feel, Durable Built Midrange Smartphone

Paying mid-tier price for flagship quality

The Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G remains as a great-value Android smartphone that is light in the consumer’s wallets. It comes in three colours: Lavender Purple, Coral Green, and Midnight Black. Apart from the Black, the other colour options use vegan leather that delivers a premium feel and aesthetics.

The device is toughened with IP68 resistance and Corning Gorilla Victus 2 glass. The AMOLED display is also flagship-grade, supporting 12-bit colour depth, 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut, 3000nits peak brightness, 2560Hz touch sampling rate (under Game mode).

Running on MediaTek Dimensity 7300-Ultra processor, the initial setup process may make the phone feel sluggish due to the numerous configurations, downloads and installations that it has to go through.

Like the predecessors, numerous pre-installed apps and games would take extra steps for the disinterested to uninstall them. After the initial activity, the Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G appears to be running rather smoothly and snappy. Face unlock is supported and is as fast as fingerprint unlock.

The smartphone is still running on the older HyperOS 1.09 based on Android 14, but you still get AI capabilities with Google Gemini and Circle to Search.

The photo gallery also supports AI Erase Pro to remove unwanted subjects, AI Image Expansion, and AI Sky.

For the Beautify function, I was amazed at the number of body part adjustments that I can customise – skin, face, jawline, chin, hair, nose, lips, neck, shoulders, arms, waist, hips, leg, and more!

    The camera system features a 200MP 1/1.4-inch f/1.65 main camera, 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 2MP macro camera.

The images are generally well-exposed for indoor and outdoors, and also for evening scenes, with strong contrast and colour tone that may look good on social posts but not as favoured for discerning image creators.

Details are generous even when I enlarge the images on the screen.

What the camera struggles with is digital zoom beyond 5X since the phone does not have a telephoto lens. Ultra-wide angle shots are also weak in the exposure at low-light conditions, but these limitations are not uncommon for low- and mid-tier smartphones.

The Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G makes it harder to justify paying more for premium smartphones. It has most of the functions that consumers will need and the quality that they will appreciate.
