Apple has introduced the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max today, featuring a lightweight and sturdy aerospace-grade titanium build, making them the lightest Pro models Apple has ever produced. The new design includes curved edges and a customizable Action button, allowing users to personalize their iPhone experience.
The camera upgrades are significant, offering the equivalent of seven professional lenses, including a more advanced 48MP Main camera system with support for a new super-high-resolution 24MP default setting, enhanced portrait capabilities, improved Night mode and Smart HDR, and an exclusive 5x Telephoto camera on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The A17 Pro chip promises high-level gaming and performance. The new USB‑C connector boasts USB 3 speeds, up to 20 times faster than USB 2, enabling new pro-level workflows.
The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will be available in four attractive finishes: black titanium, white titanium, blue titanium, and natural titanium. Pre-orders start on Friday, September 15, with availability beginning on Friday, September 22.
Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, describes this as the most advanced iPhone lineup ever, featuring a state-of-the-art titanium design, an outstanding camera system, and the powerful A17 Pro chip, which brings new levels of performance and gaming to the iPhone.
The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have a stunning, lightweight design, with aerospace-grade titanium, making them the lightest Pro models ever. They feature a new brushed texture, contoured edges, and the thinnest borders on any iPhone. The Pro models combine the strength of titanium with durable back glass and a Ceramic Shield on the front. The new design incorporates 100 per cent recycled aluminium for added strength and thermal dissipation.
The Pro models also introduce a customizable Action button, replacing the previous ring/silent switch. This button can be configured for various functions, offering users more options and convenience.
The A17 Pro chip powers these devices, featuring a 3-nanometer design with significant improvements to CPU and GPU performance. It includes hardware-accelerated ray tracing for enhanced graphics and gaming experiences, including console-level games like Resident Evil Village and Assassin’s Creed Mirage. The USB‑C connector supports USB 3 speeds, and the devices introduce new video formats, enabling advanced pro workflows.
The camera system on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max is a standout feature, with the equivalent of seven pro lenses and computational photography capabilities. The 48MP Main camera offers a new 24MP default mode for high-quality images. Users can switch between three popular focal lengths and select one as their default. The devices also support 48MP HEIF images. The iPhone 15 Pro has a 3x Telephoto camera, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max boasts a 5x optical zoom, offering versatility for photography and capturing distant subjects.
The next-generation portrait features provide better detail, vivid colours, and improved low-light performance. The devices can capture depth information automatically, allowing users to create stunning portraits after taking the photo.
Night mode has been enhanced with sharper details and richer colours, powered by the Photonic Engine and LiDAR scanner. Smart HDR offers a more realistic rendering of skin tones and is available to third-party apps.
The devices enable pro-level workflows for photographers and filmmakers with up to 20x faster transfer speeds using a USB 3 cable. They can record ProRes video directly to external storage and support ACES, the Academy Color Encoding System, for colour workflows.
Coming soon, the iPhone 15 Pro will introduce spatial video capture for Apple Vision Pro, providing three-dimensional video capabilities.
Both models use a USB‑C connector for charging and data transfer, allowing users to charge other devices like AirPods or Apple Watch from the iPhone. They support USB 3 for fast data transfer. The second-generation Ultra Wideband chip improves Find My location sharing. The devices support Wi-Fi 6E for faster wireless performance and introduce Thread support for Home app integrations.
Apple’s commitment to environmental sustainability is evident in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. They use recycled materials, including 100 per cent recycled aluminium and cobalt in the battery. Rare earth elements in magnets and gold in the USB‑C connector are also recycled. The packaging is mostly fibre-based, reducing plastic usage.
The devices come with iOS 17, offering new features like Contact Posters, Live Voicemail, enhanced Messages, NameDrop, StandBy mode, interactive widgets, improved Safari privacy, and more.
