Polestar 2 debuts in Singapore

Premium EV brand Polestar debuts in Singapore with the Polestar 2 exective liftback Battery Electric Vehicle.

If the name Polestar doesn’t sound familiar with you, that’s because it is a relatively new EV brand, though it does have a distinct Swedish-Chinese pedigree. Polestar started in 1996 as an aftermarket performance tuner for Volvo, and it was acquired by Geely-owned Volvo in 2015. In 2017 Volvo created Polestar as a premium EV performance brand, with the launch of the limited edition hybrid Polestar 1 coupe.

The Polestar 2 is the first full battery electric vehicle (BEV) under the Volvo/Geely umbrella, and is manufactured at Volvo’s new super factory in Luqiao, China, which builds Polestar, Volvo, Geely and Lynk & Co (a Chinese domestic brand) vehicles that share the Compact Modular Architecture platform (CMA).

The Polestar 2 is a luxury executive liftback created in the same market segment as the Tesla Model 3, and will be available in Singapore in three electric motor and battery pack variants.

While the Polestar 2 has Volvo design and engineering DNA, its distinctive design highlights, which includes a front treatment with Pixel LED headlights does visually distinguish it from Volvos, while Polestar claims that their vehicles will ‘feel different’ when driven and are more performance orientated, with many unique features, from the Polestar logo illuminating in the interior, to well-appointed upholstery using vegan textiles with a selection of etched deco patterns. Polestar is an EV brand concerned about the environmental impact it makes, so every Polestar vehicle is created with sustainability as a primary focus, with the long term intention of creating carbon-neutral cars by 2030.

The Polestar 2 is also the first vehicle powered by Google – with built-in Android Automotive, Google’s OS for vehicle infotainment and to control in-car systems such as air conditioning. With Google AAOS, the Polestar 2 can be synced with your Google Account for a more personalised experience, so voice recognition is tuned to you and the car will understand when you say “Hey Google, where’s the nearest prata?” and use Google Maps to navigate there. The central console is dominated by a large 11.5-inch touchscreen, with integrated eSIM for internet connectivity and Over-the-Air updates, while an integrated app includes a Polestar Digital Key, an encrypted Bluetooth feature that enables owners to unlock their vehicle, securely, from their smartphone.

The Polestar 2 model range includes three battery/powertrain variants:

  • The Standard Range Single Motor model an FWD with 165kW (224 hp) power and 69kWh Li-ion battery module capable of a range of up to 440km.
  • The Long Range Single Motor variant has a slightly larger 170kW (231 hp) electric motor with a 78kWh battery that’s able to travel 540km.
  • The Long Range Dual Motor variant features AWD from two electric motors developing 300kw (408hp) with the 78kWh battery pack, for a range of 480km.

Single motor models are able to sprint from 0-100km/h in 7.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 160kph, while the dual motor model sprints in 4.7 seconds, with a 205kph top speed.

All versions come standard with 19” alloy rims and a Plus Pack that includes a 13-speaker Harman Karman audio system, interior illumination, electric passenger seats, wireless phone charger and a panoramic roof. An optional Performance Pack (S$16,000) is available for the Long Range Dual Motor variant, and includes 20-inch forged alloy wheels with a 4-Y spoke design and diamond cut, Continental SportContact 6 rubber, Brembo 4-piston brakes with ventilated and drilled front discs, Öhlins Dual Flow Valve (DFV) manually adjustable dampers, and Golden brake callipers, valve caps and seat belts.

The Polestar 2 is now available for test drive and purchase at the temporary Polestar Space on the 6th floor of Wearnes Tower at 45 Leng Kee Road, while a more permanent Polestar Destination, also 45 Leng Kee Road, is currently in construction and scheduled to open in early 2022. When Polestar Destination opens, consumers can not only try out the Polestar 2 and configure their own cars, they can learn more about the car’s features from Polestar Specialists.

In Singapore, Polestar is exclusively distributed by long-time Volvo distributor Wearnes Automotive, which ensures that all servicing and maintenance meets an exacting standard.

Polestar has also recently announced that the Polestar 3 EV will launch in 2022, while the upcoming Polestar 5 will be based on Polestar’s Precept luxury saloon concept, with a launch date estimated for 2024.
