Ulysse Nardin is bringing a new dimension of craftsmanship to its revolutionary Freak collection with the introduction of the Freak [ONE Blue Enamel] and Freak [ONE Guilloch\u00e9], two limited editions that combine centuries-old decorative techniques with some of the most unconventional mechanics in contemporary watchmaking.<\/p>\n
First introduced in 2001, the Freak challenged almost every convention of traditional watch design by doing away with the dial, hands and crown. The Freak [ONE], launched in 2023 and awarded the Iconic Watch Prize at the Grand Prix d\u2019Horlogerie de Gen\u00e8ve that same year, distilled this radical approach into a contemporary expression of the collection.<\/p>\n
Now, 25 years after the original Freak made its debut, Ulysse Nardin is turning its attention to the decorative arts, transforming the watch’s rotating hour disc into a canvas for traditional enamelling and guilloch\u00e9 craftsmanship.<\/p>\n
A Watch Without Hands, Dial or Crown<\/strong> The absence of an upper bridge gives the carousel its distinctive floating appearance, creating a mechanical spectacle that is constantly changing throughout the day. Approximately 95 per cent of the movement’s components are designed for motion, making the mechanism as visually captivating as it is technically complex.<\/p>\n Even setting the time is unconventional. With no crown, the wearer unlocks a safety mechanism at 6 o’clock and rotates the bidirectional bezel. For these latest editions, the bezel has been subtly redesigned with softer geometry and less pronounced notches, drawing inspiration from the [Super] Freak.<\/p>\n Winding can also be performed manually by rotating the caseback, while Ulysse Nardin’s patented Grinder automatic winding system captures energy from wrist movements. Its four ultra-thin levers, each measuring just 0.12mm thick, help maximise winding efficiency, contributing to an impressive 90-hour power reserve.<\/p>\n Blue Enamel Meets Mechanical Innovation<\/strong> Unlike a conventional dial, the hour disc is an active component of the movement, making its decoration particularly challenging. Crafted from white gold for its thermal stability, the disc features a finely engraved sunray pattern beneath multiple layers of enamel.<\/p>\n The enamel is prepared by hand, applied as a pigment paste and repeatedly fired at approximately 800\u00b0C. Each firing builds colour and depth, but even the smallest imperfection can require the process to begin again. Once the desired intensity is achieved, the surface is polished to reveal its rich blue brilliance.<\/p>\n The work is carried out at Donz\u00e9 Cadrans, Ulysse Nardin’s specialist enamelling atelier in Le Locle, Switzerland. Founded in 1972 and acquired by the manufacture in 2011, the workshop preserves traditional enamelling techniques that remain among the most demanding decorative disciplines in watchmaking.<\/p>\n The result is a vivid blue backdrop that draws attention to the flying carousel while introducing a more classical artistic element to the Freak’s futuristic architecture.<\/p>\n Limited to 99 pieces, the Blue Enamel edition also marks the first Freak [ONE] to feature a full titanium case. Measuring 44mm, it is paired with an integrated ballistic-textured rubber strap and titanium folding buckle.<\/p>\n Guilloch\u00e9 Takes a More Understated Approach<\/strong> The original pattern is meticulously created by an artisan before being transferred to the production discs using flinqu\u00e9, a traditional stamping technique that preserves the detail and character of the handmade design.<\/p>\n A sand-toned finish enhances the engraved pattern, creating an interplay of light, shadow and texture as the disc rotates. The neutral colour palette provides a restrained contrast to the movement’s exposed mechanics, allowing the architecture to remain the visual centrepiece.<\/p>\n The 44mm light-grey titanium case is complemented by an integrated light-grey ballistic-textured rubber strap and titanium folding buckle, giving the watch a cohesive, contemporary appearance.<\/p>\n Also limited to 99 pieces, the Guilloch\u00e9 edition demonstrates how the Freak’s radical design can accommodate traditional craftsmanship without compromising its unmistakable identity.<\/p>\n Silicon Technology at Its Core<\/strong> Ulysse Nardin was among the pioneers of silicon in watchmaking, introducing the material with the original Freak in 2001. The Freak [ONE] continues that legacy with a silicon balance wheel and hairspring, alongside the manufacture’s patented DIAMonSIL escapement.<\/p>\n Developed in 2007, DIAMonSIL combines silicon with a diamond coating to improve resistance to friction and shock. Lightweight, flexible and anti-magnetic, silicon also contributes to the movement’s long-term precision and reliability.<\/p>\n These components are developed and manufactured at SIGATEC, Ulysse Nardin’s specialist silicon facility in Sion, Switzerland. \nAt the heart of both editions is the manufacture UN-240 calibre, a 229-component movement that serves as the time display itself.
