Apple has entered the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo, a new flagship model that combines the portability of a compact iPhone with the larger canvas of a tablet-style device.<\/p>\n

Announced in Cupertino, iPhone Duo features a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display and a 5.4-inch outer display, with both screens using the same aspect ratio so content can scale naturally between them. Apple says the outer display provides around 90 per cent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro, while the unfolded inner display is 50 per cent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.<\/p>\n

The device is powered by the A20 Pro chip, includes a new dual-battery architecture and custom vapour chamber, and runs a version of iOS 27 specifically adapted for foldable use. It also supports Apple Intelligence and Siri AI.<\/p>\n

iPhone Duo will be available in star white and night sky, with pre-orders beginning October 16 and availability from October 23.<\/p>\n

Two Displays Designed to Work as One<\/strong>
\nThe 7.6-inch inner display is the largest Apple has fitted to an iPhone, and is designed for activities such as multitasking, gaming, reading and video.<\/p>\n

Apple has added a nano-texture finish to reduce reflections and make the display crease less noticeable, while a FaceTime camera is hidden beneath the inner panel when not in use.<\/p>\n

Both the inner and outer displays support ProMotion, Always-On functionality and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.<\/p>\n

Apple also plans to add support later this year for Apple Pencil with USB-C, allowing users to take notes, sketch and mark up documents on either display.<\/p>\n

Touch ID is built into the side button rather than relying on Face ID, while users can also unlock the phone with an Apple Watch.<\/p>\n

A Titanium Foldable Built Around Durability<\/strong>
\nApple has placed considerable emphasis on durability, using Grade 5 titanium for the enclosure and a mirror-polished finish.<\/p>\n

The hinge itself is made from more than 100 components and is designed to support the centre of the display when fully opened. Apple has also used a 3D-printed hinge cover, internal support ribs and ceramic fibre inserts to reinforce the structure.<\/p>\n

Ceramic Shield protects the back, while Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display is claimed to deliver three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation.<\/p>\n

The inner display uses a multi-layer construction with high-strength glass, custom adhesives and a titanium plate beneath the panel. Apple says the adhesive layers are designed to slide slightly against one another as the phone folds, reducing stress on the display.<\/p>\n

The iPhone Duo is also rated IP68 for splash, water and dust resistance.<\/p>\n

Folding Design Unlocks New Camera Features<\/strong>
\nThe camera system is built around a 48MP Fusion Main camera, which can capture at up to 48MP resolution and also offers a 24MP default mode.<\/p>\n

It includes an integrated optical-quality 2x Telephoto, a new computational imaging pipeline, sensor-shift optical image stabilisation and improved low-light performance.<\/p>\n

A 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera, shared with the iPhone 18 Pro models, adds wider framing and macro photography.<\/p>\n

The foldable design introduces several new ways to use the cameras. Users can frame selfies using the higher-resolution rear cameras while previewing themselves on the outer display, and Duo Preview lets people being photographed see the live composition.<\/p>\n

Apple is also adding Smart Take, which uses on-device AI to recognise when subjects are posing and automatically capture a photo. Another feature, Kid Cue, plays Peanuts animations on the outer display to attract a child\u2019s attention towards the camera.<\/p>\n

For video calls, Duo FaceTime can use the outer display so another person standing beside the user can join the conversation without crowding around the main screen.<\/p>\n

Video recording extends to 4K at 120fps in Dolby Vision on the 48MP Main camera, with post-capture speed adjustment for slow-motion effects. Cinematic effects can also be applied after recording at up to 60fps, while Time-lapse supports 4K Dolby Vision HDR.<\/p>\n

iOS 27 Gets a Foldable Makeover<\/strong>
\nApple has redesigned parts of iOS 27 specifically for iPhone Duo.<\/p>\n

When unfolded, the phone can show two Home Screen pages side by side, with Today View positioned on the left. Controls, navigation elements and the Dock are shifted towards the side of the display to preserve vertical space.<\/p>\n

The Dynamic Island is also repositioned vertically, while status indicators such as Wi-Fi, cellular signal and battery information are grouped into a new corner-based interface.<\/p>\n

Apps can respond dynamically as the device is folded, rotated or flipped between displays.
\nApple says apps including Netflix, Zoom and Slack are already being adapted to the larger screen and foldable format.<\/p>\n

Split View Comes to iPhone.<\/strong>
\nOne of the biggest productivity additions is Split View, which lets users run two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time.<\/p>\n

Users can also open two windows of the same app, such as two Safari windows for comparison shopping, save preferred app pairs and quickly swap between running apps.<\/p>\n

Siri AI can remain open on one side of the screen while the user continues working in another app.<\/p>\n

StandBy also receives a larger role. iPhone Duo can enter StandBy on either display even when it is not charging, turning the phone into a clock, photo frame or widget hub when propped up.<\/p>\n

A20 Pro and New Cooling System<\/strong>
\nThe iPhone Duo uses the same A20 Pro chip found in the iPhone 18 Pro series.<\/p>\n

Apple says the six-core CPU is up to 20 per cent faster than the A19 Pro, while the seven-core GPU is up to 40 per cent faster and more efficient. A new Dual 16-core Neural Engine delivers twice the compute performance for on-device AI.<\/p>\n

The chip is built on a 2-nanometre process and offers 50 per cent more unified memory bandwidth.<\/p>\n

A custom vapour chamber connects directly to the A20 Pro using a new packaging design inspired by Apple\u2019s M-series chips. Apple claims the combination delivers up to 35 per cent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, particularly for multitasking, gaming and AI workloads.<\/p>\n\t\t\t
