A. Lange & S\u00f6hne may be instantly recognisable for icons such as the LANGE 1 and ZEITWERK, but some of the German manufacture\u2019s most compelling creations are found deeper within its collections. Described as its \u201cHidden Heroes\u201d, these watches combine highly sophisticated complications with the meticulous movement construction and finishing for which the Glash\u00fctte watchmaker is known.<\/p>\n
Founded by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in 1845 and revived by his great-grandson Walter Lange in 1990, A. Lange & S\u00f6hne today spans six core collections: LANGE 1, SAXONIA, 1815, RICHARD LANGE, ZEITWERK and ODYSSEUS. Regardless of complexity, every Lange watch is powered by an in-house manufacture movement that is double-assembled and finished by hand.<\/p>\n
The Hidden Heroes spotlight turns towards several technically exceptional references that may not always receive the attention of the manufacture\u2019s better-known models, but offer plenty for serious collectors to discover.<\/p>\n
1815 RATTRAPANTE: Mastering the Split Second<\/strong> A rattrapante, or split-seconds chronograph, employs two superimposed chronograph hands, allowing separate intervals to be measured. Lange gives the complication a suitably classical presentation through the watch\u2019s vertically symmetrical dial architecture.<\/p>\n Behind it sits the manufacture calibre L101.2, Lange\u2019s seventh interpretation of the rattrapante mechanism. Constructed with two column wheels, the movement provides a power reserve of up to 58 hours.<\/p>\n The result is a watch that keeps the visual presentation relatively restrained while allowing its mechanical sophistication to take centre stage.<\/p>\n 1815 RATTRAPANTE PERPETUAL CALENDAR: Complexity Multiplied<\/strong> Inside its 41.9mm case is the 636-part manufacture calibre L101.1, bringing together three significant complications: a rattrapante chronograph, perpetual calendar and moon-phase display.<\/p>\n The watch is offered in platinum, white gold and pink gold, with the limited-edition white-gold version distinguished by its solid pink-gold dial. Despite the amount of information and mechanical complexity involved, its classically arranged display keeps everything remarkably composed.<\/p>\n Its perpetual calendar automatically accounts for differing month lengths and leap years, requiring no correction until 2100. At the same time, the rattrapante chronograph allows two separate interval timings to be measured precisely.<\/p>\n RICHARD LANGE TOURBILLON \u201cPOUR LE M\u00c9RITE\u201d: Constant Pursuit of Precision<\/strong> Since the manufacture\u2019s modern revival, only five models have received the \u201cPour le M\u00e9rite\u201d designation, a name derived from the historic Prussian order of merit for science and the arts. Lange reserves it for some of the most technically accomplished watches in its repertoire.<\/p>\n The RICHARD LANGE TOURBILLON \u201cPOUR LE M\u00c9RITE\u201d combines a one-minute tourbillon with the fus\u00e9e-and-chain transmission system characteristic of the manufacture\u2019s \u201cPour le M\u00e9rite\u201d watches. The system is designed to maintain constant power delivery to the movement as the mainspring unwinds, helping support consistent precision throughout its running time.<\/p>\n Visually, as shown on page three of the release, the exposed tourbillon provides a dramatic mechanical counterpoint to an otherwise clean, classically styled dial.<\/p>\n DATOGRAPH PERPETUAL: Two Lange Signatures in One<\/strong> The original DATOGRAPH debuted in 1999 as the manufacture\u2019s first flyback chronograph. Its name combines \u201cdate\u201d and \u201cchronograph\u201d, while its flyback functionality allows the running chronograph to be stopped, reset and restarted rapidly.<\/p>\n Introduced in 2006, the DATOGRAPH PERPETUAL added another significant complication to the formula. Alongside its flyback chronograph, its perpetual calendar automatically displays the date, day, month and leap year, remaining accurate until 2100 before requiring a one-day correction.<\/p>\n
