Swiss watchmaker ZENITH has unveiled the new CHRONOMASTER Revival A384 Tropical, a modern reinterpretation of one of the brand\u2019s most iconic chronograph references inspired by the warm, aged aesthetic of rare vintage \u201ctropical\u201d dials.<\/p>\n
The release pays tribute to the original A384 from 1969, one of the first watches to house the legendary El Primero calibre, widely recognised as the world\u2019s first automatic integrated high-frequency chronograph movement. With the new Tropical edition, ZENITH revisits the distinctive tonneau-shaped design of the original while introducing a contemporary interpretation of naturally aged vintage watch dials.<\/p>\n

\u201cTropical\u201d dials refer to vintage watch faces that gradually transformed into rich brown tones after years of exposure to sunlight and oxidation. Originally considered unintended ageing effects, these unique colour shifts have since become highly sought after among collectors due to their rarity and individuality.<\/p>\n

Rather than recreating a specific historical piece, ZENITH says the CHRONOMASTER Revival A384 Tropical captures the overall warmth and visual depth associated with vintage tropical dials through a more refined and controlled modern execution.<\/p>\n
The watch features a white lacquered dial paired with brown-toned sub-dials in a classic \u201cchocolate panda\u201d configuration. Matching brown tones are also used on the tachymeter scale, while faceted hour markers and hands are coated with \u201cold radium\u201d Super-LumiNova to recreate the subtle patina of aged vintage watches. A bright red chronograph seconds hand adds a modern contrasting accent to the otherwise retro-inspired design.<\/p>\n
Faithful to the proportions of the original 1969 model, the new CHRONOMASTER Revival A384 Tropical comes in a compact 37mm stainless steel case directly derived from the historical blueprints. It retains the signature tonneau-shaped silhouette, pump-style pushers and alternating brushed and polished surfaces that defined the era.<\/p>\n

Powering the watch is the El Primero 400 movement, a direct descendant of the original El Primero 3019 PHC calibre introduced in 1969. Manufactured entirely in-house by ZENITH, the movement operates at a high frequency of 5Hz or 36,000 vibrations per hour, enabling precise time measurement down to one-tenth of a second.<\/p>\n
The automatic chronograph movement consists of 278 components and delivers a 50-hour power reserve. It can also be viewed through the sapphire caseback, revealing the openworked rotor shaped like the ZENITH five-pointed star.<\/p>\n

In a nod to the historical original, the watch is paired with the iconic stainless steel \u201cladder\u201d bracelet developed by Gay Fr\u00e8res in 1969. Known for its lightweight and flexible construction, the bracelet remains one of the most recognisable design elements associated with vintage ZENITH chronographs.<\/p>\n
