Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Centre Singapore (HMGICS) is rolling out its latest educational initiative, the SPOT Robot Coding Workshop, designed to spark curiosity in children aged 6 to 12 about the world of robotics and coding.
Launching on 13 September 2025, the program marks HMGICS’ second children’s initiative, following the success of the Smart Food Lab introduced earlier in June this year.
While the Smart Food Lab caters to younger children aged 3 to 6 with hands-on learning about nutrition and sustainability, the new SPOT Robot Coding Workshop invites older children to discover how technology and coding breathe life into robotics.
Bringing SPOT to the Classroom
At the heart of the workshop is a scaled-down LEGO-inspired version of SPOT, the iconic four-legged robot developed by Boston Dynamics.
In real life, SPOT plays a vital role at HMGICS’ advanced facility by autonomously navigating the production floor, capturing images of assembled components, and feeding them into AI-powered quality inspection systems. This helps ensure Hyundai’s electric vehicles are built with precision and consistency.
Designed to take on tasks that are repetitive, labour-intensive, or unsafe for humans, SPOT reflects HMGICS’ vision of human-centric, safer, and smarter manufacturing, while also demonstrating the growing role of robotics in shaping the future of mobility.
Hands-On Learning for Future Innovators
During the 90-minute session, participants will build and code their own miniature SPOT robot, learning how simple commands enable it to complete everyday tasks.
Guided by facilitators, the children will experience first-hand how robotics and coding can enhance human efficiency and convenience.
The program runs every Saturday and Sunday at 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, alongside the Smart Food Lab sessions at 10:30 am and 4:30 pm.
Each session is capped at eight children and priced at $25 per participant. All proceeds will go directly to the President’s Challenge, supporting community initiatives in Singapore.
Inspiring Tomorrow’s Changemakers
“At HMGICS, we see it as our responsibility to inspire and prepare the next generation for the future of mobility,” said Dr. Hyun Sung Park, CEO of HMGICS. “Following the Smart Food Lab, the SPOT Robot Coding Workshop offers a meaningful and engaging way for children to develop skills and curiosity around robotics and technology. We hope this program will spark their imagination and encourage them to explore what innovation can achieve.”
