Ulysse Nardin unveils the Freak S Enamel, the most complicated time-only watch ever created by the brand, now reimagined through the centuries-old artistry of enamel. Available in two mesmerising guilloché-flinqué enamel editions — vibrant turquoise blue and deep ruby red — the Freak S Enamel represents a new pinnacle in the evolution of Ulysse Nardin’s most revolutionary collection.
A Revolution Continues
When the first Freak debuted in 2001, conceived by Dr Ludwig Oechslin, it rewrote the rules of modern watchmaking.
A watch with no dial, no hands, and no crown, it introduced silicon technology to horology and forever changed how time could be displayed and experienced.
Nearly 25 years later, the Freak remains an icon of innovation. The Freak S, launched as its most complex iteration, pushed the boundaries of mechanical architecture and micro-engineering even further — and now, the Freak S Enamel elevates that legacy once more, blending futuristic construction with exquisite artisanal refinement.
At its core lies the UN-251 Manufacture calibre, one of the most intricate movements ever built for a time-only watch. Its astonishing design operates across six gear planes, incorporating:
● Two inclined silicon balance wheels set at 20° angles for enhanced stability and precision
● The world’s smallest vertical differential gear, mounted on ball bearings
● The Grinder® system, Ulysse Nardin’s patented automatic winding mechanism that harvests energy from even the slightest wrist movement
Comprising 373 components and 33 jewels, the movement powers a rotating carousel mechanism, in which almost every element is in motion. The entire movement spins on its axis once per hour, with the gold minute bridge doubling as the minute hand — a breathtaking kinetic display of horological theatre.
Both balance wheels are treated with DIAMonSIL®, a diamond-silicon composite exclusive to Ulysse Nardin, ensuring exceptional durability and efficiency.
Each rotating hour disc, crafted in 18-carat white gold, undergoes multiple firings at 800°C to achieve its vivid depth and lustre. Three to four layers of enamel are applied and meticulously hand-polished between firings, creating a translucent surface that dances with light as it rotates.
