Huawei has officially unveiled the Pura X, a groundbreaking clamshell foldable smartphone that reimagines mobile design by combining the compactness of flip phones with the expansive display of tablets. This innovative device is set to go on sale in China starting March 21.
Revolutionary Foldable Design
The Pura X stands out with its unique sideways-folding mechanism. When closed, it resembles a traditional flip phone with a square cover screen beneath a triple-camera setup.
Upon unfolding, users are greeted with a 6.3-inch display boasting a 16:10 aspect ratio, offering a wider and more immersive viewing experience akin to that of a tablet.
Advanced Display Technology
Both the internal and external displays are LTPO OLED panels supporting a 120 Hz refresh rate, ensuring smooth visuals.
The main screen achieves a peak brightness of 2,500 nits, enhancing readability even under direct sunlight.
HarmonyOS Next and AI Integration
Marking a significant shift, the Pura X is the first Huawei device to run exclusively on HarmonyOS Next, the company’s proprietary operating system devoid of any Android Open Source Project code. This transition underscores Huawei’s commitment to establishing an independent software ecosystem.
The device also debuts Harmony Intelligence, an AI assistant powered by Huawei’s in-house Pangu model and enhanced by DeepSeek AI technologies, aiming to provide users with a more intuitive and intelligent experience.
Huawei has significantly improved Harmony Intelligence with new AI capabilities integrated into Celia, its AI voice assistant. These include:
● Celia Call Assistant – Celia can answer calls based on the caller and situation, summarizing key points for efficient communication.
● Celia Time Machine – The assistant can organize photos and auto-generate travel notes, letting users relive their vacation memories effortlessly.
● AI Smart Cache – Celia preloads videos, allowing users to watch them even without an internet connection.
● Celia Whispers – Users can whisper confidential messages, and Celia will detect and save them securely.
● Smart Payment – Automatically displays a barcode when pointing the phone at a scanner.
● AI File Sharing Air Gesture – Enables drag-and-drop sharing of media across devices.
● AI Writing & Summarization – Helps generate content and summarize long articles.
● AI Speaking – Designed for elderly users, adapting speech preferences for accessibility.
These AI enhancements make the Pura X a truly smart companion, streamlining daily tasks and improving user experience.
Powerful Performance with Kirin 9020
Under the hood, the Pura X is equipped with the Kirin 9020 chipset, featuring an 8-core processor designed for efficient multitasking and performance.
This self-developed platform by HiSilicon, Huawei’s chipset division, debuted in November 2024 with the Mate 70 series.
Versatile Camera System
Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the Pura X’s versatile camera setup, which includes a 50 MP wide-angle lens with an f/1.6 aperture and optical image stabilization (OIS), a 40 MP ultra-wide lens, and an 8 MP telephoto lens offering 3.5x optical zoom and OIS.
Additionally, a 10 MP front-facing camera is embedded within the main display for high-quality selfies and video calls.
Durability and Battery Life
Constructed with space-grade materials, the Pura X’s hinge mechanism is designed for durability, ensuring a reliable folding experience. The device houses a 4,720 mAh battery supporting 66W wired and 40W wireless charging, promising extended usage and quick recharging capabilities.
