In 1968, Apollo 8 marked a significant milestone in human space exploration by becoming the first manned flight to orbit the Moon. Aboard this groundbreaking mission, each astronaut was equipped with an OMEGA Speedmaster, a crucial tool throughout NASA’s lunar missions. In a fitting tribute, OMEGA has unveiled its latest iteration of the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon, paying homage to this historic event with advanced technology and exquisite craftsmanship.
A Legacy Reinvented
Following the initial release of the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 timepiece in 2018, commemorating the mission’s 50th anniversary, OMEGA revisits this iconic design with enhanced detailing and sophistication. The new model boasts the Calibre 3869, featuring a laser-ablated Moon relief on the blackened main plate and bridges. This design intricately represents both the visible and far side of the Moon, akin to the dual perspectives experienced by astronauts and observers on Earth.
Precision and Aesthetics Combined
The manual-winding Calibre 3869 achieves the Co-Axial Master Chronometer standard, ensuring the highest level of precision, performance, and magnetic resistance in the Swiss watch industry. The Moon-themed movement is visible through the watch’s skeletonized dial, made from black anodized aluminium. OMEGA’s dedication to quality is further evident in the 44.25 mm case, polished bezel, and case back, all crafted from black ceramic with white “Grand Feu” enamel on the tachymeter scale.
The Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 stands out with its varnished yellow central chronograph seconds hand, complemented by a black rubber strap with a yellow interior. A standout feature is the small-seconds hand at 9 o’clock, designed to resemble NASA’s Saturn V rocket. Crafted from Grade 5 Titanium, this hand is a testament to OMEGA’s innovative craftsmanship, achieved through laser turning and a mix of varnishing and laser treatments.
Engraved on the caseback are the words “WE’LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE,” famously spoken by Command Module Pilot Jim Lovell before Apollo 8 made its pioneering journey to the far side of the Moon. This engraving not only honours the mission’s historic significance but also symbolizes human courage and the spirit of exploration.
A Tribute to Lunar Exploration
Wearing the OMEGA Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 is more than a statement of style; it’s a connection to the mysteries of the lunar surface and OMEGA’s storied history in space exploration. As humanity continues to look towards the stars, the Apollo 8 mission remains a powerful reminder of our collective capabilities and the unending quest for discovery. Find out more here.
