LG Electronics has announced a significant breakthrough in 6G technology. In a test run jointly with LG U+, the company successfully achieved wireless transmission and reception of 6G terahertz (THz) data over a record-breaking distance of 500 meters in an outdoor urban setting. This test, conducted at the beginning of the month at LG Science Park in Magok, Seoul, sets a new benchmark in 6G telecommunications research and development, underscoring LG’s leadership in the field.

Surpassing Previous Achievements
This latest accomplishment builds upon LG’s successful 2022 test at the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz Institute in Berlin, Germany, where they transmitted 6G THz data wirelessly over 320 meters. The collaboration with Fraunhofer led to the development of critical 6G equipment, including a multi-channel power amplifier and a low-noise amplifier for the receiver. These advancements significantly enhanced performance, improving output by over 50 per cent.

The Significance of the LG Sciencepark Test
The test at LG Sciencepark is monumental for several reasons. It not only increased the transmission distance to 500 meters, matching the standard for high-powered urban base stations but also validated the practicality of 6G in diverse communication scenarios. This includes building-to-building, building-to-ground terminal, and ground-to-ground terminal communications, paving the way for the commercialization of 6G THz communications.

Pioneering the Shift to 6G
The transition from 5G to 6G is set to revolutionize telecommunications with vastly improved data rates, ultra-low latency, high reliability, and the seamless integration of AI and sensing. 6G will be pivotal for a range of futuristic LG businesses, including autonomous driving, the metaverse, smart homes, and smart factories.
