Synology Unveils BeeDrive: A Compact Data Hub for Simultaneous Backup of Personal Files and Photos

Synology has announced the launch of BeeDrive, a compact data hub that enables simultaneous backup of personal files and photos from computers, phones, and tablets. Setting up BeeDrive takes less than three minutes and provides fast local transfer speeds, ensuring complete data privacy and ownership.

According to David Hu, the product manager at Synology Inc., the increasing amount of data generated by individuals on personal devices, especially due to better cameras and new photo or video formats, is consuming storage space rapidly. However, the growth in personal data has not been matched by internet upload speeds, resulting in slower and costlier cloud storage options. In response, Synology aims to offer a local and private alternative to BeeDrive.

BeeDrive is designed to cater to a wider range of users, including those who are computer-literate but lack the time or networking knowledge to maintain a 24/7 backup server. It provides a hassle-free option for families and friends of existing Synology users.

With BeeDrive, users can select specific folders on their PCs for protection. The data in these folders are automatically backed up in real time, offering a better recovery point objective (RPO) compared to scheduled hourly backups. In the event of a computer failure, users can simply connect BeeDrive to another computer and access their files immediately without the need for software installation or lengthy recovery processes.

BeeDrive overcomes bandwidth limitations imposed by internet or cloud service providers, delivering backup speeds that are up to 11 times faster for large files from PCs and six times faster for mobile devices compared to cloud backups.

BeeDrive also supports the backup of photos and videos from iOS and Android devices over Wi-Fi, ensuring the protection of phones and tablets. By keeping the BeeDrive-connected PC and mobile devices on the same network and scanning a QR code, users can initiate the backup process and free up space on their phones.

Additionally, BeeDrive offers the BeeDrop feature, which enables professionals, like field staff, to wirelessly transfer content captured on their iOS and Android devices to BeeDrive. This allows immediate access to the files on a PC without the need for uploading and downloading from the cloud. BeeDrive also facilitates two-way file synchronization between work and home computers, ensuring that all files are up-to-date on the device being used while keeping a second copy on BeeDrive.

BeeDrive is available in 1TB and 2TB capacity from mid-June for Windows, iOS, and Android through Synology partners and resellers worldwide. macOS support is planned. For more details, visit https://bee.synology.com.
